About this listen

A dream girls trip to a luxurious French chateau devolves into a deadly nightmare of secrets and lies in this “twisty, well-paced murder mystery that never fully lets go” (Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author).

Welcome to picturesque Provence, where the Lady of the Chateau, Séraphine Demargelasse, has opened its elegant doors to her granddaughter Darcy and her three friends. Twenty years earlier, the four girlfriends studied abroad together in France and visited the old woman on the weekends, creating the group’s deep bond. But why this sudden invitation?

Amid winery tours, market visits, and fancy dinners overlooking olive groves and lavender fields, it becomes clear that each woman has a hidden reason for returning to the estate after all these years. Then, following a wild evening’s celebration, Séraphine is found brutally murdered.

In the midst of this shocking crime, a sinister Instagram account pops up, exposing snapshots from the friends’ intimate moments at the chateau, while threatening to reveal more.

As they race to uncover who murdered Séraphine—and is now stalking them—the friends begin to suspect each other. Because the chateau houses many secrets…several worth killing for in this “mesmerizing story of betrayal and revenge” (Megan Collins, author of The Family Plot).

Couldn’t Put It Down

Kept my attention from the beginning until the very end. The the different narrators made the story even more enjoyable.

It my fav

Story a bit convoluted. Character voices sound too similar-hard to follow who’s saying what in conversations

Convoluted story

I disliked the narration. The female voices were very nasally and the French accents under or overdone.

Exactly OK

Most of the story is character thoughts rather than character actions, which doesn't make for as exciting a murder mystery. So there were long sidebars that made up most of the chapter, only for one small thing to actually happen and nothing to be revealed. For as wordy as the characters were in their memories or philosophies, I still didn't come away feeling particularly attached to or like I knew the characters. The narration was OK. Any time the women tried to do different voices for the men, though, it kind of took me out of the story because it sounded more like Kermit the frog. I'd have been fine with them continuing to read in their own voice over that.

Hoping for a sequel

"The Chateau" by Jaclyn Goldis is a gripping mystery that kept me hooked until the last page. The twist at the end took me by surprise, and I appreciated how well it was concealed throughout the story. The way the book concluded hinted at future developments, making me excited for a potential sequel. Goldis skillfully weaves suspense and anticipation, making "The Chateau" a must-read for fans of thrillers.

whodunit?!!

This was kinda giving me The Paris apartment, big little lies, lifetime crime/drama movie vibes.

It was alot of pov passages (mostly about things taking place in the past and what the character was thinking about in that moment)

Also with the 7 main characters and side characters in the story I had to go back and forth sometimes to make sure I kept them all in track but overall this wasn't bad, I really hate there was a cliffhanger!

I kinda hope there is sequel to see what will happen even if it's a short story...I would read it.

Great Character

Great character development and pacing. The story started off interesting enough and by the end it was a story wrapped in a story, wrapped in a twist.
