About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The only question which hangs over the life of Sir Richard Wyndham, notable whip, dandy and Corinthian, is one of marriage. On the eve of making the most momentous decision of his life, he is on his way home, a little worse for drink, when he chances upon a beautiful young fugitive climbing out of a window by means of knotted sheets - and so finds a perfect opportunity for his own escape.

The Corinthian has eveything that Georgette Heyer's devoted readership came to expect and that made her one of the most popular novelists of her day and still adored by a huge audience.

Fabulous

Very good narrator and of course as always a wonderful story by the masterful Georgette Heyer. I read it again and again but the Audible brought it vividly to life.

Fun but compelling romp

Not the right reader but she tried. She did a plausible Somerset accent but made no attempt to lower her voice when a man was speaking or differentiate the voices in other ways, so sometimes it was hard to tell who was speaking. But it was still fun after all these years!

Lighthearted fun

The story was engaging, the characters well developed. A taste of a bygone era with believable settings and actions. Victorian romance at its best.

An old favourite ruined by poor narration

I was looking forward to listening to this as it has long been one of my favourite Georgette Heyer's. Unfortunately the narration is lack lustre at best, with almost no attempt to change character voices, even when a distinct change of accent is kindly provided by the author (honestly, trying to pronounce a cockney accent in plummy tones is just jarring).
If I didn't know this book well I would have been quite confused; and I would think, for someone new to the book, it would be incomprehensible. As it was, it still took me some unravelling, (and dipping into the memory banks), at times. I felt like the narrator had little comprehension of the intricacies of the plot (and displayed no interest in working it out).
Not happy. Audible needs to pay better homage to classics.
As to the book, this is almost always where I'd recommend the uninitiated to start on Georgette Heyer. It's funny and fast paced but doesn't require too much understanding of the culture of the time. It was one of my first Heyer's (started as a teen) and where I wish I'd started (and if you haven't read any Austen you may still be a little out of your depth).
I would not recommend this audible version - I suggest you hold out for a better one

One Of the Funniest Heyer Books

This May-December romance has it all: cross-dressing shenanigans, eloping lovers, diamond theft, and a murder.

But it’s also quite funny if you don’t mind love-at-first-sight between a 29yo MMC and a 17yo FMC! {Remember this is the Regency era…}

I’ve read it several times in print, but the audio production made me notice new things and I laughed out loud a couple times.

The Wonderful Characters and Fast-Moving Plot!

What’s to dislike? My parents introduced the wonderful world of Georgette Heyer to me when I was in high school. I’m 74 and still reading her books! I can’t count how many times I’ve read many of them

I Enjoyed It

There was enough difference in the voice to easily identify each character. It was being read to rather than listening to a performance, which I found found comforting.

Every Georgette novel is amazing

I love all Heyer's novels but the narration in this one was ok; not a great deal of difference in voices or dialect between characters.

I liked it so well, I will likely listen to it again one day.

Another Brat, Well Read

Heyer delighted in men of the world bullying and then falling for unworldly girls. If that doesn’t offend you, dive in. Some listeners are disappointed that Remmie Milner is not a one-woman repertory company, like one of my favorites, Mil Nicholson who performs Dickens extraordinarily well for LibriVox. But I enjoyed this less interventionist rendition because the reader herself is winning and intelligent. Thank you!
