About this listen

Jude's life has been turned upside-down thanks her new man, Piers Targett, who's keen to get her involved in his hobby – or obsession – of Real Tennis. But when one of Piers' friends dies on the court in suspicious circumstances, Jude finds herself caught up in the police investigation. Meanwhile, Jude's neighbour Carole is trying to identify the human remains known locally as the “Lady in the Lake”.

As the two investigations become intertwined, Carole and Jude's efforts to find the truth look set to lead to more murders.

Get ready to suspend your disbelief -

I love cozies, but this one was a big stretch. I found myself screaming "call the police" on more than one occasion. Woman causes a man's death, is poised to commit murder, and Carol and Jude sit her down, give her a cup of tea, and let her husband take her home because she is a little out of sorts. Yeah, not his best....

Very Enjoyable Cozy

I do love Brett's whole Fethering series with Carole and Jude, two retired/ semi-retired middle-aged divorced women with wildly different characters, fitting together so well to solve murders in and around their small town of Fethering.

This book was just as enjoyable for me as the earlier books, even though I know some reviewers did not like that Carole and Jude worked on separate mysteries. But - they did overlap and interact and try to bring each other up to speed regularly. Yes, we also saw a different side to Jude, and I suppose Brett wants to show the different dimensions of his long-term characters. So now we know the mysterious and usually-calm, new-agey Jude a little more intimately, I'm certain she will be back to her old self in the next installments.

I really enjoyed this listen - so comforting and, well, cozy!

Simon Brett Doesn't Disappoint!

There were a few logical inconsistencies but as these stories are light and the very premise of Carol and Jude acting as amateur detectives is unbelievable anyway, I can forgive the author. It's still a great story!

It's amazing how he can churn out mystery after mystery and make them so intriguing.

This one had the added enticement of Jude's affair with Piers.

As usual Brett does a brilliant job of reading his own books.

I think this is the best one yet of the series!

may he never stop writing

brett knows his characters and is curious about the worlds they live in. a delicious actor -- eat your heart out, Charles -- his portrayal of old Cedric here should not be missed. For all his blithe spirit,Brettis is capable of bursts of restorative rage over, for example our heedless abandonment of rich old theater traditions. Most of all,
Brett has as infectious a love and respect for his characters as does my beloved Anthony Trollope. Thank you, Mŕ. Brett! May you live and write forever and en joy it and enjoy it all forever. Jennifer Dunning

I’m a fan

I love this series. It’s such delightful entertainment. I wish Audible would release the missing ones. It’s odd how licensing affects only some of the books in the series. I will say that there was one very amusing thing I noticed in this book, for some reason the author used the word “incongruous” so many times, I wondered if it was intentional. The writing is excellent and that was oddly out of place.

Another Great Fethering Book

Thoroughly enjoy this series. The characters are wonderful and the wit adds to their likability. The plots are interesting and not overly intense. We love Simon Brett’s narration of his own books. Great cozy audiobook.

Formulayic generic, cliché British small town murder mystery

One of the worst books I’ve ever had to read. Truly, it is astonishing that this makes money, but I guess it fits a certain stereotype that there are readers for even for a guilty pleasure, summer read kind of thing this is pretty bad.
