About this listen

An adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness, The Count of Monte Cristo focuses on a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty.

Considered a literary classic today, The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

UPDATED RATING (2018): As I reread this book I discovered so much more about it. Now I give it a strong 5 stars without any hesitation! I picked up so much more detail. I connected more with the characters. And I saw the humor which Dumas hid in all the scenes.

(2017) 4.5 stars.

This book is a beloved classic for a reason -- the story is solidly written and the characters are intriguing. It is a huge book which never feels too long. I enjoyed the story very much and never felt as though Dumas wrote too many pages. I am left wondering only one thing: why did I wait so long to read it? But, I have been asking myself that often this year as I have been reading the classics for the first time.

Even better the second time around!

Dumas is a genius. The story has so many characters and twists and turns that I benefitted from reading it twice to catch all the nuances. Also helpful was Wikipedias breakdown of the characters and plot!
Hope. Always.

Classic

The story is superb and the narrator is good. However, at least one chapter was entirely missing, save the first two paragraphs (I own the book to double-checked my memory). What happened? And what other portion's were cut that I failed to notice? Maybe you should look for another, longer, audio rendition...

Not the full version... what happened?

The Count of Monte Cristo was a thrill to listen to, and I loved Peter Batchelor as narrator. His ability to easily move between characters and build suspense was a pleasure. This is now one of my favorite books and one I believe I will come back to often.

Riveting experience

At first I was mostly annoyed by the changing voices and character portrayals by the narrator. It did not take long however before the annoyance dissolved,
and I was completely transported to the fabulous and intricate world Dumas creates in this classic. On the contrary, the voices become so real, that I am in awe of the skill to which the narrator has executed his task. The writing is flawless, and the narration greatly helps deliver this masterpiece.

Didn't like the narrator at first, after 20 minutes I learned to like it. In the end I realized it was a really great performance. I've read the story before and listening to this version was just as good.

Great narrator, of course great story

Truely one of the best stories ever told. the narration itself is great, but the dialogue is not as well done. Also the last meeting of Edmond and Mercedes is missing.

Great story ok quality, and narration.
