Publisher's summary

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are summoned to Theobald Grange, the Warwickshire home of Lady Heminworth.

Being of a nervous and superstitious disposition, her Ladyship lives in fear. Her husband and elder son were recently murdered, apparently by the ghost of a court jester who was executed on the site centuries before. The apparition has warned that she, too, is to die.

Holmes rejects a supernatural explanation, although his adversary seems unaffected by gunfire and is able to take flight and disappear. The "Great Detective" brings his powers to bear, but still the killings continue....

Enjoyable

Is it bizarre I picked up a Sherlock book when I’ve never listened to an original? I’m sure the movies with Robert Downey Jr doesn’t count.

So being slightly unfamiliar with ‘authentic’ writing, I didn’t like how Sherlock figured it out off the pages, then explained what he learned while he was away. And we never had any idea why he went where he went and the bread crumbs he followed. I prefer a mystery in which I can see or read the crumbs - even if it doesn’t piece together into a slice of bread and I end up with a bag of croutons.

I loved the narrator. He only currently has a couple other books another him in Audible, and one is another by this author, so I’ll pass.

One of the best Holmes & Watson pastiches ever

I applaud writer Arthur Hall for doing what few authors can do, write a Sherlock Holmes pastiche that can pass for an original ACD story. He captures the atmosphere of the time well. I particularly appreciate that Watson is given an almost equal role, which is well-deserved. Additionally, Watson's medical skills are highlighted, a point that is often overlooked by both Doyle and subsequent writers. Narrator Nick Crosby does a fantastic job. I am looking forward to the subsequent books in this series.

Good story. Give it a shot.

The story is good, if maybe a little drawn out. the narrator reads a bit slowly for my taste, so keep that in mind.

Excellent

Holmes and Watson are off to Theobald Grange to assist Lady Heminworth, whose husband and son have both recently died. The case that involves a ghost of a court jester that is threatening Lady Heminworth, her niece and members of the household. Baffling, but Holmes is up to the challenge. The narration is excellent as well. The characters and story come alive. I received a free audiobook code for my honest review.

Great story! Wonderful narration! Very enjoyable! Could have been written by A.C. Doyle himself. Very impressed with the narrator's voicing of characters. All in all a very enjoyable experience.

Good story but narrator, whom voices the characters well, tends to whisper. Tough listen in the car.

Story Good, Narrator Very Bad, C+

This particular Sherlock Holmes story is pretty good, but the narrator is bad...makes Holmes sound like an automaton. Voice of Watson good, which seems like narrator's normal voice, but Sherlock's is horrible. Secondary male characters sound alike, as do secondary female characters.

If you don't mind the narrator, story is actually rather compelling. Author is a little, I don't know, condescending or maybe targeting a different audience than most Holmes books from other authors. This author over-explains things just a bit. It's not bad, just a little much.

So, very interesting "case", slightly below average Holmes author, and the worst narrator I've heard for a Holmes audiobook. There are a lot better options for Sherlockians on Audible.

An excellent choice

A wonderful, well-plotted mystery in the true Holmesian style. The characters feel real and their motivations are credible. I particularly liked how deceiving all the involved are *laughs* And I was amused by the animal's rights bits spread across the story :P

I had only read Tales From the Annals of Sherlock Holmes by this author, which I liked but didn't love. This one, though? This one I loved, and I'm more than willing to go through the whole series.

A great listening choice for any Holmes and Watson fan :)
