About this listen

In the spring of 1912, American writer Arthur Pearce is reeling from the wounds inflicted by a disastrous marriage. But his plans to travel abroad, write a new novel, and forget about his ex-wife are interrupted by a lovely young woman he encounters on a London-bound train. Her name is Sarah Coyle, and the tale she tells him chills his blood.

Sarah’s younger sister has been entranced by Count Richard Dunning, who is rumored to dabble in bizarre religious rites and experimental medicine. Arthur agrees to help, but he has no idea of what awaits him at Altarbook, Sarah’s ancestral mansion, or the remote English countryside, where Count Dunning and his followers are about to unleash an unholy supernatural power.

Awesome gothic horror story

I loved this short gothic tale that has everything reminiscent of some of the earliest horror stories, with a bit of a modern bite in describing the violence our main character faces.

The action

It was good for a free book. Very short, which is not a bad thing or a good thing, just depends on what ya like. I think the book has potential to be much more than it was though, it could’ve been much better. But by no means was it trash or anything, but don’t spend a credit on it .

Relies too much on gore

Story was ok, seemed like author relied too much on shock & gore. Story was ok, but nothing to write home about. I’m a big fan of gruesome stuff, but this one felt forced. Thank goodness it was fairly short, think it would’ve become annoying if longer

Gothic Perfection 🖤

This one is magnificent!! Impossible to put down, I ran through it in one sitting. The creeping unease builds to some serious horror and gore!

Good book

I really liked this book but I hate writing reviews. Why can I just leave stars and go on with my day.....

soooo good!

This book is a true work of art. Simultaneously paying homage to the classic feel of works that birthed the genre & infusing just enough of the modern penchant for explicit darkness to set it apart and appeal to today's reader. Such a blending brings to mind other rare blendings of a similar nature which are a part of a very small number to skillfully blend the vibes of new & classic works, such as Usher's Passing by Robert McCammon & The Initial Insult by Mindy McGinnis. I'm eager to see if the author's previous works contain the same level of skilled wordcraft.

THE DISMEMBERED

THE DISMEMBERED by Jonathan Janz has great characterization, twists in the story that totally surprised me and some excellent tension. The narration by Matt Godfrey is excellent and only enhances what is already a fantastic story.

Perfection

If you're a lover of Edgar and Mary Shelley this story is for you. It was absolutely perfect. If old timey Victorian spooky stories are your jam this will not disappoint!

A note perfect love letter to Gothic horror

For the Dismembered, Janz writes like Shelley by way of Shirley Jackson. The prose is perfectly woven in the Gothic tradition, though when it comes to the most brutal parts of the tale, no punches are pulled. This is my first Janz and it won't be the last. one of the best books I've read in years.

Great Read!

A book like this, reads itself. Janz absolutely nails what he was going for. Enjoy.
