About this listen

“Steven Pacey’s performance brings the story to life. Listeners will be on the edge of their seats.”—Booklist (starred review)

A brand-new epic fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Joe Abercrombie, featuring a notorious band of anti-heroes on a delightfully bloody and raucous journey

Holy work sometimes requires unholy deeds.

Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters. The mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends.

Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it's a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.

Critic reviews

The Devils is Joe Abercrombie at his best: exciting, witty, vicious. History buffs (like me!) will love the fantasy-historical setting overflowing with brilliant little details.”—Django Wexler, author of How to Become a Dark Lord and Die Trying

“Devilish fun, an unholy delight. Wielding his trademarked grit and stiletto-sharp prose, Abercrombie is at his bloody best weaving a tale of monstrous heroes who discover the humanity in themselves.”—Pierce Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, the first in a new series, is ferociously imagined, and rumbles along with the unstoppable force of a city-burying avalanche. It's also frequently shout-out-loud-with-laughter funny. When it comes to big, shamelessly entertaining fantasy, Abercrombie is in a class of his own.”—Joe Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box

Hilarious

I loved the character development and voices. And most importantly the way the story wrapped up. However, did feel like we jumped around a bit too much but overall still enjoyed it.

The different narrator voices.

Unfairly, I went into this new series with the expectations of it being similar to his First Law series. This book was a fun read, containing a lot more humor than his other books. The story does no come close to his previous masterpiece. This book is much more action packed, less of a grandiose story, and is less gripping. It does contain a few cliches and none of his jaw dropping surprises... there was a surprise but it didn't seem to be critical to the overall story. Overall, it's a fun read if you do not compare it to his other work.

It's different....

Say one thing about Joe Abercrombie, say he knows how to write. Steven Pacey is fantastic as usual. Not the most original review, but you have to be realistic about these things, after all...

Being realistic

Yet another brilliant series in the making. This one grabbed me from the very first scenes and didn’t let go of my attention to the very end. I just adore his prose, his characters, his humor. I actually laughed out loud or marveled at his turn of phrase many, many, times. Which speaks to just how deeply I was absorbed into the story. Another excellent addition to abercrombies works.

Abercrombie strikes again

Funny, epic, fun, brutal, endearing. Joe brought all his storytelling skills for this one and Steven Pacey voiced it to life. A journey I'm bummed is over. For now.

Abercrombie's best journey yet

A white knuckle fantasy ride reminiscent of 80s fantasy movies rife with action and celluloid pulp I loved it.

Action packed and great frenetic pacing
