About this listen

Cherie Priest is our new queen of darkness, folks. Time to kneel before her, lest she take our heads. —Chuck Wendig, author of The Book of Accidents

A violent storm washes a mysterious house onto a rural Pacific Northwest beach, stopping the heart of the only woman who knows what it means. Her grandson, Simon Culpepper, vanishes in the aftermath, leaving two of his childhood friends to comb the small, isolated island for answers—but decades have passed since Melissa and Leo were close if they were ever close at all.

Now they'll have to put aside old rivalries and grudges if they want to find or save the man who brought them together in the first place—and on the way they'll learn a great deal about the sinister house on the beach, the man who built it, and the evil he's bringing back to Marrowstone Island.

From award-winning author Cherie Priest comes a deeply haunting and atmospheric horror-thriller that explores the lengths we'll go to protect those we love.

I have found a new author! I’m thrilled that I have more of her books to listen to!

I love fun creepy mystery

Very cool high concept about a haunted house, and the characters were well designed and complex enough. However, the actual villain was kinda missing. Don’t get me wrong, this is worth listening to, I just wish there was more depth about the villain and their motivations.

Unique concept, standard execution - but in a good way

Cherie Priest definitely knows how to create an atmosphere. It was easy to feel the terror of the main characters, and you never knew what was coming next. Personally, I feel like I might’ve liked it better if it had been read by a man because I found Leo the more sympathetic character. But I certainly enjoyed it and look forward to my next Cherie Priest audiobook.

Just the right level of creepy

Many unanswered questions. It was hinted that Simon died, but nothing was said long listen and not sure why and what happened.

Atmospheric

Great performance. Fun and creepy at the same time. And provides an appreciation of the Northwest as well.

Witchy Goodness with Lovecraftian Evilness

Good premise. Too much build up, followed by an info dump that wasn't very convincing, decent character backgrounds followed by little growth and tedious bickering.

Good premise, weak execution

Is this a book about relationships, horror, mystery, or urban fantasy? It tries and fails to be all these. There’s a lot of problems with this book. The first 1/2 of the book moves extremely slowly and primarily consists of the two main characters having the same argument about who’s the better friend to their missing mutual friend. They don’t seem particularly concerned about the friend’s absence and while they do investigate it, it seems like an afterthought to them. The publisher’s summary made me think this is a haunted house book - it most definitely is not. They barely go in the haunted house. Then there’s element of urban fantasy (witches) that takes on a Deus ex machina role at the end of the book. I actually got through the whole book hoping it would improve. It didn’t.

Doesn’t know what genre it wants to be

I didn’t find the characters to be compelling. The story could have been at least a bit more mysterious or thrilling. The narrator did her best but the story is just lacking.

I found this to be quite boring.

I loved the Boneshaker series, Not Flesh nor Feathers and that series. this book sounds like it was read by a Vally girl and was written by one too. Two thumbs down.

there's nothing like a good book...and
