About this listen

In the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister - at all costs.

Once a year, a road appears in the forest. And at the end of it, the ghost of Lucy Gallows beckons. Lucy's game isn't for the faint of heart. If you win, you escape with your life. But if you lose....

Sara's sister disappeared one year ago - and only Sara knows where she is. Becca went to find the ghost of Lucy Gallows and is trapped on the road that leads to her. In the sleepy town of Briar Glen, Lucy's road is nothing more than local lore. But Sara knows it's real, and she's going to find it.

When Sara and her skeptical friends meet in the forest to search for Becca, the mysterious road unfurls before them. All they have to do is walk down it. But the path to Lucy is not of this world, and it has its own rules. Every mistake summons new horrors. Vengeful spirits and broken, angry creatures are waiting for them to slip, and no one is guaranteed safe passage. The only certainty is this: The road has a toll and it will be paid.

Sara knows that if she steps onto the road, she might not come back. But Becca needs her.

And Lucy is waiting.

Dark and complex cosmic horror

The publisher's summary and "teen/family" label don't do this book justice. The novel was much darker, more complicated, and disturbing (in a good way) than I would have guessed. More than *just* a ghost story, this book will leave you haunted.
CW: abuse, suicide

Confusing

The first thing I will say it skip the audiobook and read this one on your own. It's not that the audiobook was bad... The narrator was great BUT I think because there were so many characters to keep track of it would have been better with at least a couple narrators. It was confusing for me. I also grew bored with it about ⅓ of the way through and didn't get excited to finish it until about ⅔ of the way through. Even then, waiting for the ending felt like it took too long.

No ending

This was a great story, but don't get into it if you hate being left without knowing how the story ends!

Could Not Stop Listening

This book is one of the best I’ve listened to in years. The story is deep and thought provoking with a shocking twist at the end. An absolute must for anybody interested in the magic realism genre

So creepy

I could not stop listening to this book. The author just had this way with world building and character development. Kate Alice Marshall managed to make me want to stop and keep going at the same time. Something about this book reminded me of My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix because both included an epic supernatural adventure, very real friendships and a beautiful platonic love story. the reason why I gave it 4 stats overall is because of the ending. Something about it just felt very half baked. I went from being on a high for 8 hours to just feeling completely annoyed. I would recommend this to a friend though. It was beautifully disturbing.

the plot was invigorating. I couldn't wait to hear more!

From the moment it starts until the very last words are spoken or keeps you wanting to hear more! I wish this was turned into a movie that I could watch again and again!

Interesting

I enjoyed this book. The beginning was a little tough because there were so many characters but that worked out ok. The plot was intriguing and I looked forward to what might happen next. I’m disappointed by the ending, it seemed a bit rushed and then abruptly ended- that’s my opinion. Perhaps the ending was meant to leave the reader wondering but… over all I would suggest it to a friend. The middle was great, creepy stuff, suspense, misdirect.. give it a listen/read!

Hard to follow

I was super excited for this book, but I had a really hard time following the story. It wasn’t spooky or creepy. Just all over the place. The narration may have played a role there. I’ll keep reading Kate Alice Marshall but this one is a big no for me.

UH-MAY-ZENE!

Exactly what I want in a story - no matter what genre… you quickly know what’s going on, you quickly understand the characters and you quickly know the point/goal. No drag out trying to decipher plot, or characters. Thank you THANK YOU!!
