About this listen

She's a friendly voice on the phone. But can you trust her?

The people who call End of the Line need hope. They need reassurance that life is worth living. But some are unlucky enough to get through to Laura. Laura doesn’t want them to hope. She wants them to die.

Laura hasn’t had it easy: she's survived sickness and a difficult marriage only to find herself heading for forty, unsettled and angry. She doesn't love talking to people worse off than she is. She craves it.

But now someone’s on to her - Ryan, whose world falls apart when his pregnant wife ends her life, hand in hand with a stranger. Who was this man, and why did they choose to die together?

The sinister truth is within Ryan's grasp, but he has no idea of the desperate lengths Laura will go to...

Because the best thing about being a Good Samaritan is that you can get away with murder.

DISAPPOINTING. OKAY. DISAPPOINTING.

Excellent narrators. The first one-fourth of this audiobook is slow and unrealistic, but the middle of the audiobook is quite good. Unfortunately, the last fourth of the book is both predictable and back to unrealistic again. Worst of all, it leaves the story unfinished but not even interesting enough that the listener cares.

OMG!!

John Marrs has done it again. This book was so juicy and good from the beginning to the end that I did not want to come. I highly recommend it. The performances were terrific.

Interesting Premise

I enjoyed the premise of this story. It was interesting to think about a person who works at a suicide hotline that helps to push people into making that decision instead of away from it. I do wonder if the author got the idea for this book after reading Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me" since Ted Bundy worked at a suicide prevention hotline.

Anyway, my tastes in books is rather dark so if I rate it highly like I did for this one, know that you're in for a fun, twisted ride and if you try to tell your family/coworkers about what you're reading they'll give you a look like what's wrong with you!?. The main character is fairly complex and as the story moves you find out that things are not how she is really telling them, just how she is trying to force/remember. The ending did take me by surprise which was really nice and unexpected.

Long and sometimes implausible, but a good story

No spoilers here. This was my first time listening to a book by this author, so I am not familiar with his other books and cannot compare it to them.

Other than being confused a few times as to which character was talking due to the voices being identical, the performance was fine.

As for the story it seemed to be a lot longer than it needed to be. There were a lot of times when I was very frustrated with the protagonist, and I had many "Oh, come on..." moments due to the way the story played out and sometimes dragged out. I had to keep suspending my disbelief to be able to continue with the book because it seemed like there were several things that just seemed implausible.

However, it was a good story and I enjoyed it. I had a few moments where I audibly cheered because something I had wanted to happen had started to happen, and there were several moments where I gasped either in shock or horror. The story did keep my interest although I wish it hadn't taken as long to get to the end. As for the ending I did not like it and was confused thinking that the audible app had incorrectly ended the book when it wasn't actually over. The ending was rather abrupt.

I would recommend this audiobook, but only for people willing to suspend disbelief several times.

Very good

Really entertaining, good twists, excellent performance. Kind of an abrupt ending, so 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, a very good book.

Not sure what to say...

I am a bit embarrassed to admit I liked this book. It's extremely sick and warped. I know I should feel more pity for people with mental illness but...well, NO SPOILERS HERE. Let's just say if you know someone who has mental illness I'd suggest you stay away from this book. If you don't, and you like warped stories get it.

In it for the thrills!

The Good Samaritan was an interesting take on an unbalanced female character. The thrill comes in when you realize the area she excels in is both sinister and superior to those around her. My take home message was that it's a naive approach to fight fire with fire. Has anyone spotted firefighters armed with more fire to put one out? 5 out of 5 in all categories. Well done, folks!

Twisted

John Marrs did it again!! I love to hate the mentally deranged lead characters in his books! Once you think you grasp what is happening and what is going to happen, you’re just left with your mouth hanging open.
