Publisher's summary

Stranded on an alien planet with his consciousness implanted inside of a Station Core, Milton Frederick has used all of the resources at his disposal to protect his damaged Core from local hostile beasts, Proctans, and even a massive bear-gorilla hybrid that almost single-handedly destroyed his dungeon.

Milton is joined by his AI guide, ALANNA, as well as Brint and Whisp - two Proctans that have joined him in his endeavors; with the introduction of two new “recruits” - Rosewyn and Moxwell - they form a plan that enlists a few more Guardian Guild members to help combat the threat that Brint had discovered underneath the Quizard Mountains to the east.

Unfortunately, not everything is going as well for the Guardian Guild, the organization tasked with defending the Proctan kingdom from the wild beasts roaming their borders. A political coup instigated by the Cordpower Company has upset the monarchial government and the Guild has been caught in the crossfire.

Now, Milton has to figure out how to deal with that issue, while at the same time preparing for the inevitable arrival of the threat from the Quizard Mountains.

Fortunately, new discoveries of his own has led to great strides in manipulating the Gene Mutations that affect the Proctans. Not only has the introduction of a Neurological Control Unit allowed for the manipulation of abilities, but it also provides something that will change the very nature of how the Proctans view death - and something that Milton, as a gamer, knows very well: respawning.

But will those advantages be enough against the threat coming their way?

Contains LitRPG/GameLit elements such as level progression and experience, optional tables, no harems, and a heavy Dungeon Core emphasis.

Time Padding but makes up

I had to take off two stars for time Padding. the stat tables can be truncated and shortened to make the story 5+hours shorter. the final table is fine but we don't need percentages read to us one after another. it turns into just a jumble of none stop words.

Giving 1 star back for the inclusion of the PDFs and the ability to skip the tables with a chapter skip (great inclusion )

Giving another star back for the great performance.

Good but issues

While I do find the numbers interesting the kept pulling me out of the story in the audible version. I don’t think it would be an issue but in this version I would keep having to chapter skip to get back to the actual story

Fun story

There are multiple points of conflict in this book and it feels like the entire world is against Milton at times. The characters are fun and there are plenty of stats for those that like crunch. I’m excited to see where the rest of the story goes. The narration is very well done.

Wasn't good... It was GREAT!!!

I couldn't give this book enough stars.
I'm really getting into the characters and story line here and so it just keeps getting better and better.
I think if there is anything that I would be critical of it would be that the stats info keeps growing and growing. Especially when more characters are added. And MORE characters are added! If you are a stats and minutia geek like Brooks this is the icing on your cake.
This isn't the last book in the series so he leaves a bunch of stuff hanging so you want to get to the next book. I personally can't wait.
We found out at the end of the last book that a serious threat has unwittingly showed it's very powerful face and you get to see that here.
Brooks and Meili get 6 out of 5 stars for me on this book.
If you like fantasy, dungeons and especially LitRPG you are going to love this book!

Fun slog

So this one was as much a slog as I expected. Not a terrible story by any means but not something I was unable to put down. I’ll check out the next one when I can.

Ever played dungeon keeper? Awesome!

What a great take on the whole dungeons and dragons, fantasy realms, LITRPG type of book. A human trapped in the core of a computer. The core designed to protect a race that may or may not still exist. Crash landed on a planet it must protect itself and gather resources to search out its creating race and protect it. In the mean time it’s like a dungeon master deep in a dungeon. It must protect itself from invaders after its secrets and its resources. It makes an unlikely band of allies that it enhances with special respawn abilities. I missed the first two books but will be going back for them as well as for the rest of the series. This was awesome!!! I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

Still a great story, a little more stats.

The story gets better.
The stats get more intrusive.

The story takes a few turns you would expect and 2 that you likely will not see coming. The ways in which the Mr. Brooks turns this core novel in to a rpg are amazing. Makes me wish I was there. (I am in my head but the darn book ends and I'm back at work)

If you have listened to book 2 you already know the stats are heavy. This is a nice thing at the end of the book. Sadly I'm still not in love with them taking up 4 or 5 minutes per chapter.
