About this listen

Leigh Harker's quiet suburban home was her sanctuary for more than a decade, until things abruptly changed. Curtains open by themselves. Radios turn off and on. And a dark figure looms in the shadows of her bedroom door at night, watching her and waiting for her to finally let down her guard enough to fall asleep.

Pushed to her limits but unwilling to abandon her home, Leigh struggles to find answers. But each step forces her towards something more terrifying than she ever imagined.

A poisonous shadow seeps from the locked door beneath the stairs. The handle rattles through the night, and fingernails scratch at the wood. Her home harbors dangerous secrets, and now that Leigh is trapped within its walls, she fears she may never escape.

I love this author; so even though it started out slow I hung I hung in there. SO glad I did. It begins with the main character narrating alone for quite some time. Very descriptive and I didn't know how I could listen that way for the length of the book. BUT it gets really good. Like amazing. loved it.

Starts Slow- Hang in There; GREAT Story

it was a great suspense filled book & I'll look for more by this author.

loved the not knowing

It had a really slow build, lots of detail and description. One thing that stands out is the constant references to what the main character’s tongue is doing. It got to be a distraction after a while. Other than that an interesting take on a haunted house story.

Spooky story but what’s with the tongue thing?

I really enjoyed it , maybe slow for some others but overall i really enjoyed it. Sometimes i feel Darcy writes her characters to be a little stupid. This is my 3rd book I’ve read of hers and the characters always frustrate me a little. YES it was a noise! YEA! BE SCARED RUN! that sort of thing. I loved the characters in this book though, they weren’t so much “stupid” great ending. I would recommend.

Good story

Usually, I don’t have a single bad thing to say about a Darcy Coates book, but while the writing is awesome, this story really dragged on for me. It was what, ten hours or something? of the same location and the same themes. And unfortunately it does become very repetitive. I had to take a break around the six hour mark and switch it up, but wasn’t willing to give up on it. Still worth a listen. Good plot, just could have been a bit condensed to keep listeners (or just me 😂🙈) engaged. Overall, great narration!

Another great one!

It was slow going at first. I was listening and saying “you know why! You know why!”, and at first thought this was boring until … if you have the patience to go through the first few chapters hopefully you’ll be as captivated as I was.

What a surprise

Darcy Coats never disappoints. I was unsure the first 9-10 chapters because of the character building but oh boy it got so much better! The end moment of “ah ha! I knew it!” Followed by the “no way!” Because I did not actually know it! So. So. So good!

I thought I knew, but I had no idea!

The first chapter led the story off depicting the most terrifying scene I can recall out of anything I've read or watched. Unfortunately, the fright was mostly replaced by suspense thereafter. The heart of the book was a bit too drawn and there seemed to be an overkill in use of adjectives. Almost felt like too much time was spent using a thesaurus in editing the lines. Although the story couldn't keep up with the high bar established at its beginning, it is a worthile listen with a good narrator and an uplifting enjoyable ending.

Strong start and good ending

It creates an unease without violence, gore, language or sex. The narration was great. This is my 1st book with this author, I’ll be looking for more from her.

Very creepy

This was such a good listen I didn’t want it to end. Loved the twist which made it different from other ghost/haunted stories. Best of all, no unnecessary graphic sex scenes or gore.

Loved it!
