About this listen

Darkness lives within....

Cash strapped, working for agencies and living in shared accommodation, Stephanie Booth feels she can fall no further. So when she takes a new room at the right price, she believes her luck has finally turned. But 82 Edgware Road is not what it appears to be.

It's not only the eerie atmosphere of the vast, neglected house or the disturbing attitude of her new landlord, Knacker McGuire, that makes her uneasy - it's the whispers behind the fireplace, the scratching beneath floors, the footsteps in the dark and the young women weeping in neighbouring rooms. And when Knacker's cousin, Fergal, arrives, the danger goes vertical.

But this is merely a beginning, a gateway to horrors beyond Stephanie's worst nightmares. And in a house where no one listens to the screams, will she ever get out alive?

I was hoping for a good scare, but this book didn’t give it to me. I felt that too many parts of this book were too stretched out and over explained, the story kept relying on repetitive narrative mechanisms (ex: something happens, the story flashes forward, then it explains what had happened between the gap. This was used numerous times throughout), and a lot of back story not only didn’t feel needed, but didn’t add anything to the overall story. There’s supposed to be an upcoming Netflix film for this, and I feel like this would translate great to the screen, but not worth a read/listen.

Disappointed

The reader was magical and the novel is unique and important. Like realism in a reality that includes a lot of spookiness.

Stunning

It was a kinda strange read. The 2 main male characters came across as the obnoxious a**holes they are, and so well performed I hated their guts! Thought book was tres Scary! But I get what folks said about overlong character explanations and kinda slow other places in book, too. Annoying!! I speeded up playback several times to just Get On With It!

Very tense going oftentimes. Friggin creepy!

I liked the experience and the narrator was very good, but I am not sure what was going on half the time.

There was too much going on and very abrupt transitions between dreams, reality, visions????

Also the main character frustrated the heck out of me with her incomprehensible choices, the excuse for this was that she was young, but she was able to defeat and overcome some pretty incredible odds.

Not sure what just happened

The overall story is a bit too long and meandering. The first half could have been condensed a bit to improve the pacing.

great premise and writing, strong characters

I have been on a Nevill sprint recently, and have really come to enjoy his work. This novel did not follow the trajectory I had initially anticipated—honestly, I started listening and subsequently “shelved” it in less than thirty minutes. However, the title kept popping up in every “what’s your favorite/most disturbing/genuinely scary horror read…” post on Reddit, and it seemed worthwhile to continue on. Great read if you enjoy mounting dread, despicable characters, great narration, and haunting passages that are likely to linger in the minds of most.

On to the next Nevill!

Unexpected direction!

Any additional comments?

this one has teeth. it's creepy and at times disturbing. i hope audible snatches up additional Adam Nevill titles as soon as possible. It's hard to find good and spooky horror fiction. i'm glad i now have another author to keep tabs on.

certainly worth the time

Creeping dread, horror and supernatural psychological torment. Great story, expertly narrated. Gets a bit wordy and boggy near the end and the back story is a little convoluted, but I would still recommend it for anyone looking for pre-Halloween goose bumps.

...and that's really saying something!!! I couldn't get it out of my mind. When working or cleaning or showering, et al...I was THINKING about this "house" and it's occupants. And of could about Black Mag! But no spoilers. Wow! Just trust a 51 year old horror and dark fantasy (no YA) genre addict. Do not miss Adam Nevill and, as if your ability to continue reading at all depended on it, do NOT miss No One Gets Out Alive!!!

His best one yet...
