Publisher's summary

For paranormal investigator David Spur, nothing is as dangerous as home.

A lot has changed for David since the events of The Demon of Mansfeld Manor. He now spends his time traveling to the nation’s most notorious haunted sites for his popular television show. But when he returns to Tennessee for a much-needed break, he quickly realizes this vacation is going to be anything but relaxing.

Something is going on in the idyllic town of Roan Mountain. His childhood friend Melanie is sleeping in the woods rather than her newly purchased mountain home. And something seems to be drawing her to the ruins of a centuries-old hotel.

David will soon learn that this mystery goes deeper than his usual case. An ancient evil is stirring in Roan Mountain, and it may be tied to his father’s disappearance twenty years ago. To help his friend, David will have to face both the ghosts of an old hotel and the ghosts of his past.

A solid sequel and a great tale of the paranormal

Loved the first installment of the series narrated by Joe Hempel. This sequel sets us with a different narrator Steve Campbell. While
I am a huge fan of Joe Hempel’s work (especially in the horror field) Steve Campbell did a solid job in the sequel. He was able to bring the characters to life and set a good spine chilling Atmosphere as written by the author. As for the story we have a paranormal researcher turned TV star taking some time off in his home town. Approached by a love from
His past he finds himself thrust into what seems at first like a simple haunting. Instead he is sucked into a terrifying and twisted haunting that will take him back to his fathers death and a family legacy that will shock you. And without providing too much in the way of a spoiler, I hope you have a healthy liver. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

very good

Narrator was much better than previous book, but a couple of people he handled badly. Otherwise he was very good.

Story was fun and lots of twists. Would recommend.

Spooky

Very strange but interesting story line. Narrator is good, great at the men voices but the females voices are bad and mostly sound too much alike. I will have to check out the first in this series.

Complex and Entertaining!

This was my first S.A. Jacob's book. This is the second book in the The Paranormal Archaeologist Series, a sequel to The Demon of Mansfeld Manor. The characters are interesting, and the storyline is fast-paced, intriguing, and entertaining. I liked the paranormal mystery, the intrigue, and the romance in the story. Good narration from Steve Campbell. #StoryOrigin

Meh.....

the story was very basic and the narrator's voices for most of the characters were cringeworthy and hard to listen to....nobody in the real world talks like Austin or Gordon. Also, David is a huge drama queen and most of the time when he talks to Melanie or Linda he is super-rude.

An entertaining and slightly scary listen!

First off, I'd just like to mention that although the blurb references that this is a follow-up to a previous entry, absolutely no prior knowledge is required to enjoy this one as the story is self-contained. Having gotten that out of the way, let me share my feelings about this interesting supernatural thriller.

I listened to this one a lot on my lengthy commute to and from work and I have to say that there were times when I really got lost in it. This isn't your run of the mill paranormal tale, as the ghosts almost take a backseat to an intriguing mystery about a secret society operating in a small southern town. It also deals a lot with the main character David's past, and his personal turmoil as he tries to come to terms with past failures and regrets (mostly with regard to his relationship with his father and former girlfriend). So right then and there you can see how this is a much deeper story than most.

But yes, there are certainly still some "haunting" moments for those who like their thrillers with a little bit of a supernatural flair. I appreciated that Jacobs didn't go for the cheap scares for the most part and let the story play out gradually as we discover little pieces of the mystery through David's own investigation of it. And the payoff is that much better because of it, quite honestly.

As far as the narration goes, I was pleased with Steve Campbell's pace and tone. I never felt lost as to which character was speaking at any given time and his voice was not grating in any way, but rather smooth in delivery and not getting in the way of the story at all. I thought it was a good job overall.

If you are looking for a mysterious and slightly scary audiobook to listen to, THE HAUNTING OF ROAN MOUNTAIN has a good deal to offer. Ancient legends, characters who are battling old demons from the past, and a hint of a supernatural connection to the central mystery that keeps you guessing, this audiobook really scratched that non-SFF itch that I feel at times. If you need a good escape and you want to listen to something that will entertain and creep you out a bit, then check this one out for sure.

Hooked me in on First Page

The story starts out with the feeling of a paranormal investigator who has their own tv show. But then there is a twist, something that David didn't understand. He found out that there was something in the woods that was killing people. That the old house his high school crush bought was haunted. His father's family were protectors. The high school crush she isn't who she says she is. An old treasure hunt that has been happening for years. What is happening.

Within a few pages you are hooked.

works fine as a stand alone

came to this as a fan of Steve so no prior knowledge of S.A. Jacobs or the series, but the story holds up on it's own and you get enough relevant details to keep up with everything.

the story is simple in the telling, but complex in execution.
great characters even if a little predictable at times.
a great mystery novel that I heartily recommend, I might even pick up the rest of the series when it drops

as mentioned before I'm a fan of Steves, so won't go on about how talented or awesome he is, just know he does a amazing job

Not for me

Three stars - I did not dislike, it simply just wasn't my type of book.

I was VERY surprised that this was an actual romance novel, with very little spooks and ghostly-stuff going on. I enjoyed this as a standalone, as I have never read or listening to the first install in the series. However I LOVE anything to do with national parks/forests, so a haunted one kept me gripped most of the time it was involved.

The narrator was very good! There were moments I disliked his impressions though, but when speaking normally he was well enunciated and able to lull me into the story.
