Good story despite some disturbing moments

I wanted to switch it off after the first hour as I couldn’t stand the heroine but as I was driving I kept on listening.
The wedding night scene was very unpleasant to put mildly, hero’s treatment of heroine was appalling, but if you are fan of Cathrine Coulter you know it is a common theme that runs though most of her books ( in various degrees there is always abuse and mistreatment)
With all of that said, I love Cathrine Coulter writing and second part of the story kept me hooked and listening to the end.

The Heir

Wonderful narration by Anne Flosnik! Intriguing mystery romance by Catherine Coulter. The characters as well as the plot were extremely well developed and provided an interesting romance full of mystery, love and the lessons of learning to trust.

I love this book! paperback and audio

most memorable moments was when Bella and The Earl began their marriage anew. As well as when The Earl shared Javed true reason for coming to Evesham Abbey

yes I forced you but it was not rape I used cream!

I dont normally not a fan of trigger warnings but this book needs one.

90% is about an abusive relationship with rape and her having to defend herself to keep him from doing it again even with a gun to keep him from doing it again. He also is verbally abusive. Also dispute knowing she was raised like a boy and very smart he treats her like an idiot play thing to demean. Even showing her he had all the power because he was the earl and deserved the respect besides just showing up the day before.

so many other things wrong with the book...
- she has to marry her cousin who looks so much like her they could be "twins" and the descriptions start to sound incestuous.
- actual incest.. her half-sister unknowingly slept with her half brother

No No No

I give a lot of historical leeway to the historical context of stories in this genre. I get that it was “a different time.” But there is NEVER a time when rape is an appropriate plot point in romance novel. NEVER.
He raped her. Period. He brutalized her. He was violent and disgusting. And yet I read on. I thought “an author who can make me like this bastard surely deserves an award.”
Coulter is not that good of an author. There was no real resolution of the rape. They both just kind of “got over it.” I’m sorry...what?!!! Absolutely NOT!! Disgusting, painful to read, not romantic in any way. Coulter and the publisher should be ashamed.
