Publisher's summary

As a mother, a wife, and a businesswoman, Kaia Roman always had a plan. But when her biggest plan, the business she co-founded, collapsed, Kaia found herself crushed by depression. And what felt even worse was that, with a husband and two kids relying on her, she didn't have a plan to move forward.

Determined to turn her life around and put her ingrained habits of stress and anxiety behind her, Kaia decided to put everything else on hold and dedicate 30 days to the singular pursuit of joy. The results were astonishing - and lasted much longer than the initial month-long project.

In this uplifting and eye-opening memoir, Kaia uses her business savvy to create a month-long Joy Plan to get back on her feet fast. Using scientific research on hormones, neurotransmitters, and mindfulness, along with the daily dedication to creating a more joyful existence, Kaia teaches listeners how to go beyond temporary happiness and succeed in creating joy that lasts.

Just what I needed!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Joy Plan to be better than the print version?

I prefer audiobooks over print as I can do my everyday things while listening to a book but in this case, I love both print (for reference) and the audio version equally the same

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Throughout the book, many things rang true.......this book was brought to me just when I needed to be reassured that the universe delivers

Any additional comments?

Fairytale

Oh, to be thirty years old, with a loving husband and two gorgeous kids, a supportive circle of friends and living in a beautiful town by the sea, in a first world country!

Despite the fact that I could not see how an author with these credentials could know anything about improving the joy in "normal" people's lives, there were some good pointers.

Useful book.

Perfect mix of practicality and spirituality

The mix of practicality and spirituality inspired me while making feel empowered to find my joy. Currently on the 30 day plan and am already feeling renewed and at times new feelings I haven't felt. Amazing and life changing book.

A joyful thumbs up

Honestly, I've never had a book coming to my life with more perfect timing. And I have never read a book ( or listened to a book) in which, after I finished it, I immediately started from the beginning again. A few chapters in, I sent it to three of my closest girlfriends and told them to start reading it now because this book is a game changing book. Thank you Kaia!

This self-focused memoir is not for me

The author finally lost me as a DNF when her "terrible, dark, and scary" life was simply that she realized her neighbors owned their home and she didn’t. That she was outside in her pajamas and didn't have a Christmas tree. When she realized they had new cars and she didn’t, etc. Childhood trauma for her was moving a lot and changing schools often (though not nearly as often as kids living in real trauma situations, if they’re lucky to go at all). It doesn’t sound like she has any idea of what true childhood trauma is, especially if it is ongoing. Or what real devastations are. She appears to live a life most could only dream of. This book feels like a money grab: borrowing ideas from the experts who have gone before her, then going through an experiment so that she could write a book about how successful their principles are. Coming from a long-time publishing background, I get it—tossing an "easy content" book out there in a light, modern storytelling style as a quick way to increase her exposure and create a well-known brand. As a reader, it would have been preferable to have the book presented in an informative way with more practical and actionable items instead of story after story of an envious lifestyle full of friends and beaches and an understanding husband. As it is, we hear her over-dramatize her barely there hardships and listen to her say “I” thousands of times. The information and good tidbits have to be extrapolated out when they briefly come up in the self-focused storytelling. My plan is to buy the books she pulls her material from and learn the information in a more mature, less shallow way. That said, I appreciate that the title of her book has inspired me to remember to be grateful and to also get back to changing my perspective on negative thoughts and situations when they come up.
