About this listen
Too Happy to Be Sad Girl: a self-help memoir written by an iconic brown girl boss!
Are you looking for the courage to finally start living your truth? Are you ready to find happiness in yourself, stop struggling with self-worth, and finally kick anxiety to the curb?
Now’s the time! Too Happy to Be Sad Girl is an inspiring guide that will make you laugh, cry, think, and finally stand up for yourself!
If you've spent years feeling like you've put everyone else's needs ahead of your own, struggling with self-esteem, or just felt like you were not living up to your potential, you're not alone. Every one of us has a unique journey, often filled with pain, hardship, and a hefty dose of dark times. Every one of us must find the strength and courage to live with purpose.
Angel Aviles is one of those people who made a living making movies. In fact, in 1993, she appeared as the Sad Girl in the cult classic film Mi Vida Loca. She had a beautiful life in Los Angeles, but at some point, her battle with anxiety and panic took her from heaven through hell. She fought for years to gain her self-confidence and learned so much in the process.
In 2011, Angel began a side hustle as a life coach. Today, she's helped countless women find self-worth and happiness in themselves. With her book, you can begin the process of becoming "too happy", too!
This heart-to-heart autobiography reveals how Angel learned to use her anxiety and change her life. It's a straightforward guide to help you understand who you are and what you want and learn how to find joy, whether you're a new mom, a divorcee, or a fierce 40-year-old. It's a riveting story. As you listen, you will feel less alone and inspired to pursue your dreams.
Angel is not your typical life coach. In fact, she likes to think of herself as a comrade, a trusted friend, full of love and genuine advice.

Story
Growing up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants in Chicago in the nineties, Erika Sánchez was a self-described pariah, misfit, and disappointment—a foul-mouthed, melancholic rabble-rouser who painted her nails black but also loved comedy, often laughing so hard with her friends that she had to leave her school classroom. Twenty-five years later, she’s now an award-winning novelist, poet, and essayist, but she’s still got an irrepressible laugh, an acerbic wit, and singular powers of perception about the world around her.

Story
In this dual polemic and manifesto, Julissa dives into and tears apart the lie that assimilation leads to belonging. She combs through history and her own story to break down this myth, arguing that assimilation is a moving finish line designed to keep Black and brown Americans and immigrants chasing racist American ideals. She talks about the Lie of Success, the Lie of Legality, the Lie of Whiteness, and the Lie of English - each promising that if you obtain these things, you will reach acceptance and won’t be an outsider anymore.

Story
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Is there something wrong with me? How many more wrong ones until the right one? Am I hard to love? Madison Prewett Troutt knows what it’s like to ask these questions in the middle of the night—to doubt and worry about never finding the love so desperately hoped for. But Madi has discovered a deeper truth now, that the love we’re searching for is already ours. In The Love Everybody Wants, Madi sets aside the shallow messages our culture shouts every day to help us hear God’s beautiful whisper: I have loved you with an everlasting love. And nothing will ever change that.

Story
Nothing Is Missing is a “sparkling and impassioned story” (Glamour) of what it takes to show up for yourself—and the joy that can come once you do. Raised in a home where food was unstable and anger was the norm, Nicole learned that she needed to take charge of her own safety and security. So she did: She got into an elite private school by talking to a stranger in her dad’s cab, she strategized her way onto Wheel of Fortune to pay for college, she adopted three girls after meeting their mother panhandling, she quit her job to launch her own business, and she struggled.
