Publisher's summary

WATCH WILL TRENT ON ABC!

New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter brings back Will Trent and Sara Linton in this superb and timely thriller full of devious twists, disturbing secrets, and shocking surprises you won’t see coming.

A mysterious kidnapping

On a hot summer night, a scientist from the Centers for Disease Control is grabbed by unknown assailants in a shopping center parking lot. Vanished into thin air, the authorities are desperate to save the doctor.

A devastating explosion

One month later, the serenity of a sunny Sunday afternoon is shattered by the boom of a ground-shaking blast—followed by another seconds later. One of Atlanta’s busiest and most important neighborhoods —the location of Emory University, two major hospitals, the FBI headquarters, and the CDC—has been bombed.

A diabolical enemy

Medical examiner Sara Linton and her partner Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to the scene—and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy thousands of innocent lives. When the assailants abduct Sara, Will goes undercover to save her and prevent a massacre—putting his own life on the line for the woman and the country he loves.

Critic reviews

"[Narrator Kathleen Early] masterfully differentiates the main characters and delivers a chilling depiction of the militia leader. A gripping listen." (AudioFile Magazine)

Editor's Pick

An FBI thriller practically ripped from the headlines
"Karin Slaughter slays when it comes to writing suspenseful tales so devastatingly real that Netflix (see: Pieces of Her) and the big screen are on high alert. Her latest detective novel, The Last Widow, proves this Georgia native ain’t slowing down anytime soon. This recommendation (thanks, Editor Tricia!) introduced me to the Will Trent series, which works soundly as a standalone. With a fast-paced plot that dives deep into the topics of (trigger warning) rape trauma, child exploitation, and domestic terrorism—and that references recent world events—you could easily imagine the frightening storyline being more fact than fiction. The characters—each incredibly performed by Kathleen Early—are richly developed, with the leads displaying a satisfying touch of heartache and passion that kept me invested to the end. It’s a wild ride, so buckle in."

Great Storyline

I enjoyed the multiple vantage points to the story—what unfolds for different people at the same times. It is fun to get different pieces of the puzzle revealed from different points of view. I loved seeing everyone work their piece to foil the plan of terrorism. I’ve been following Will and Sarah for several books now and enjoy the complexities of their relationship. This was the first book where there wasn’t some big PERSONAL conflict they they had to overcome, so I enjoyed that. The prior books have a great deal of relationship drama where they take turns being angry at the other for various slights. This was a bigger conflict that they had to face together!

One of my all time favorite series.

The only negative thing I can say about it is that it had to end.

Loved it - great standalone book - you won’t regret this purchase

Kathleen Early shines again reading this awesome book that is later in a series - but don’t let that deter you from considering this book. Great characters, captivating story, awesome performance. You will not regret this purchase.

Another Great Will & Sara Installment!

The ninth installment in the Will Trent series does not disappoint! What do the kidnapping of a scientist from the Centers for Disease Control and massive explosion in a major Atlanta neighborhood have in common? Will and Sara soon find out when they find themselves embroiled in the middle of a militia group/cult trying to destroy many human lives. In a deadly showdown, Sara is also kidnapped, and Will must risk all to get her back. Karin Slaughter writes great books and creates fantastic characters, and they keep me coming back! I once again listened to this on audiobook with the talented Kathleen Early narrating this compelling book. I gave it five flaming stars!
