Six days before Baer Creighton cut down a cabal of dogfighters, a 16-year-old girl disappeared while walking home from school in Asheville, North Carolina. Witnesses later claimed they saw her in the back of a police car. Twenty-five years before that, an illegal fireworks plant blew up in Benton, Tennessee, killing 11, and raining M100 firecrackers over half a county.

A few days later, a 13-year-old boy learned his highest calling was murder.

The Mundane Work of Vengeance begins where My Brother’s Destroyer ends: Baer Creighton taking buckets of gold to Mae, dreaming of driving west. But Baer has no idea the treachery, blood, and misery in store. At his lowest with no one to trust, he’ll have to decide whether to save a family who betrays him - or a kidnapped girl buried in a basement, a half-state away. If he can save anyone at all. You won’t pause The Mundane Work of Vengeance until long after you reach the final moments.

Prepare yourself for a battle of good and evil unlike any you've seen. I really enjoyed how the author turned the ending around from the way it seemed like it was heading.

great listen

Kain Foster has a wonderful range of voices making it easy to know which character is speaking. Baer's voice sounds like Sam Elliott impersonating Phil Robertson. All the women character's sound like Dustin Hoffman doing his Dorthy Micheal's voice in Tootsie. Not complaining, just stating my opinion.

I have finished the first two books of the series in as many days. The story is compelling, the historical events used as the basis from which he builds his fiction is accurate and his words paints a vivid image (some are vivid enough to cause retching).

Spoiler alert: Baer is a sympathetic character which lures you into his quandary long before you realize, he too his not necessarily a nice guy.

I totally recommend the book and it's predecessor, just be prepared to not get anything done or get any sleep.

Be prepared to stay up all night.

To me, this seemed like a really well written story. The characters are laid out very well. You think you have a real feel for them, until you get to the end. The other thing I like about this story is that it doesn’t cover a lot of time. I am not sure but to me, it seemed like only about a week or maybe two passes in the whole book. That kept the flow going and my interest locked onto this book. One thing I didn’t like about the audiobook itself, was the slowest speed of the narration. It was so slow it drove me nuts. Only after I had gone into the Audible settings and increased the narration speed to 1.5, could I enjoy this book. Until then I was going to return it. If anyone else is trying to listen to this series, I would recommend the same trick. You will be shocked at how much better the book is after you’ve done that.

Man, you gotta love these characters.
