About this listen

In the slums of 1880s New York, Una Kelly has grown up to be a rough-and-tumble grifter, able to filch a pocketbook in five seconds flat. But when another con-woman pins her for a murder she didn't commit, Una is forced to flee. Running from the police, Una lies her way into an unlikely refuge: the nursing school at Bellevue Hospital.

Based on Florence Nightingale's nursing principles, Bellevue is the first school of its kind in the country. Where once nurses were assumed to be ignorant and unskilled, Bellevue prizes discipline, intellect, and moral character, and only young women of good breeding need apply. At first, Una balks at her prim classmates and the doctors' endless commands. Yet life on the streets has prepared her for the horrors of injury and disease found on the wards, and she slowly gains friendship and self-respect.

Just as she finds her footing, Una's suspicions about a patient's death put her at risk of exposure, and will force her to choose between her instinct for self-preservation, and exposing her identity in order to save others.

very entertaining

I quite enjoyed this! The main character is fetching, and the historical research makes the period setting feel credible.
The story is engrossing and we'll woven.
Disregarding the over use of the word "pesky", the book is pretty -written.
I recommend it as an entertaining, spirited, intelligent listen!

Great Story

I really enjoyed this book! It was entertaining and I was soon pulled into the story line. I appreciated the book had minimal profanity and the lack sexual innuendos. The story could stand on its own without it. Thank you to the author and narrator for entertaining me for many hours.

Rare triple 5 star

The book was great but I honestly don’t think I would have fully enjoyed it like I did were it not for the outstanding narration of Victoria Johanssan. I am actually searching for titles based on her narration now. However I will also be wanting to read more books by the author. Brilliant historical fiction and very unique. A quick glance shows her other novels are similar.

Predictable but good

Like a Hallmark movie, you can’t stop paying attention. It’s not deep but it’s fun

Interesting the history of nursing.

Enjoyed this book the story and information of nursing during that era. The arrogance of the physicians remain the same today. Especially in the surgeons.
Loved it.

Author of Knowledge

The author of this book/audiobook has been trained as a nurse, and so she brings much authority to the story that is spun. It is well written and well worth your time!

Vanessa Johansson turns in another professional narration. Always engaging.

I highly recommend this audiobook.

Very engaging!

I really enjoyed listening to this story. It was very well done and I could just imagine what the times were like in the late 1800’s. I highly recommend it.
