About this listen

The husband-and-wife treasure-hunting team of Sam and Remi Fargo return in a new adventure as they search for an ancient scroll - which carries a deadly curse - in this thrilling addition to Clive Cussler's best-selling series.

In AD 533, the last Vandal ruler in North Africa consults an oracle on how to defeat the invading Byzantine army. The oracle tells the king that a high priestess cast a curse upon the Vandal Kingdom after a sacred scroll was stolen. In order to lift the curse, the scroll must be returned to its rightful home. But the kingdom falls before the scroll is found, leaving its location a great mystery...until a current-day archaeological dig, funded by Sam and Remi Fargo, uncovers some vital clues.

The search for the ancient scroll is put on hold when the Fargos learn that a shipment of supplies intended for their charitable foundation's school has been stolen, and they travel to Nigeria to deliver new supplies themselves. But their mission becomes infinitely more complicated when they run afoul of a band of robbers. The group takes Remi and several students hostage, and there are signs that the kidnapping is related to the missing scroll. The Fargos need all their skills to save the lives of the young girls at the school before they uncover the hidden treasure...and lift the deadly curse.

Critic reviews

"Witty dialogue and plenty of red herrings will delight Cussler fans. This entry may be the best yet in the series.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Burcell brings a fast-paced and engaging style to the enterprise that will not only please Cussler fans, but may also bring in new readers who love high-concept adventure.” (Booklist)

“[A] thrilling addition to Clive Cussler’s bestselling series...Burcell gets stronger each time out, which means so does Sam and Remi Fargo, who are arguably Cussler’s best heroes going right now.” (The Real Book Spy)

Good Book But not My Favorite Fargo Adventure

As I said in the title this was a good book. I absolutely enjoyed every bit of it, however this did not seam to be as focused on the treasure hunting aspect the Fargo's are known for.

Exciting, well read, great proverbs to foretell the coming chapter, and as usual just another great book by Clive Cussler.

Another Clive Cussler perfection

Sam and Remi Fargo stories are always good and Clive Cussler (who ALWAYS teams with the best co-writers) is an AMAZING author. As a kid, like most boys, my reading tastes ran to the adventure stories - Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer filled my imagination. Clive Cussler creates the grown-ups version of the Mark Twain novels. All without one curse word or reference to sex or bodily functions. That is true across all of his series: NUMA Files, Isaac Bell, Juan Cabrio etc - I can share them with my 86-year-old mother or my kids and grandkids without ever worrying about content.
Sam and Remi Fargo are his Ultra-Rich treasure hunting husband and wife duo that always seek treasures because of some historical event that suddenly becomes relevant to modern day. This book is slightly different because the treasure hunt and the historical event that propels the Fargos deep into Africa is secondary to their adventures of building a school for girls in the Boko Haram infested areas of Nigeria and Cameroon. The Fargos are attempting to build the school for girls and must fight off local gangs bent on stealing supplies and kidnapping girls for ransome. That is a very real problem in daily headlines of the area in present day. At the same time, the Fargos are funding an archeological dig in the Gobi and have an internal problem with embezzlement and murder. The two problems art artfully woven together although saving the girls and the school takes the lions share of the story, treasure hunting and adventure are in endless supply.
As always, Scott Brick is the most amazing narrator currently doing audio books, in my opinion. This is another absolute masterpiece for a writer and narrator with so many already to their credit. Action Adventures don't get better than this.

Proverbs

Good story but a little hard to follow the prophecy.
Also, HATED having to listen to a proverb at the beginning of each section. Way too many proverbs took away from the story.

Get Hooked on a book!

Always a movie in your mind. I always laugh when the author steps into the pages. Just a small trademark that makes me laugh.
