About this listen

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon has captivated millions with her critically acclaimed Outlander novels, the inspiration for the Starz original series. From the moment Claire Randall stepped through a standing stone circle and was thrown back in time to the year 1743 - and into a world that threatens life, limb, loyalty, heart, soul, and everything else Claire has - fans have been hungry to know everything about this world and its inhabitants, particularly a Scottish soldier named Jamie Fraser.

In this beautifully written compendium of all things Outlandish, Gabaldon covers the first four novels of the main series.

Including:

  • Full synopses of Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, and Drums of Autumn
  • A complete listing of the characters (fictional and historical) in the first four novels in the series as well as family trees and genealogical notes
  • A comprehensive glossary and pronunciation guide to Gaelic terms and usage
  • The Gabaldon Theory of Time Travel, explained
  • Frequently asked questions to the author and her (sometimes surprising) answers
  • An annotated bibliography
  • Essays about medicine and magic in the 18th century, researching historical fiction, creating characters, and more
  • Professionally cast horoscopes for Jamie and Claire
  • The making of the TV series: how we got there from here and what happened next (including "My Brief Career as a TV Actor")
  • Behind-the-scenes stories from the Outlander TV series set.

For anyone who wants to spend more time with the Outlander characters and the world they inhabit, Diana Gabaldon here opens a door through the standing stones and offers a guided tour of what lies within.

A Court of Thorns and Roses is a young adult high fantasy series by Sarah J. Maas. The saga begins when Feyre Archeron, a 19-year-old huntress, is kidnapped and brought to the faerie lands of Prythian. Her kidnapper is Tamlin, a High Fae and one of the seven High Lords of Prythian. The series follows their story as Feyre spends time in the world of the fae and discovers that everything she thought she knew about faeries is absolutely wrong.

I love this "reference" as it fills in some spaces and questions of Outlander fans. Hearing Dianna tell parts of the story and her process broadens the scope and experience for me. ♥️

Would you listen to The Outlandish Companion (Revised and Updated) again? Why?

Most likely NO, since I have listened to all of the full length books about 7 times.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The story revolves around Jamie and Claire but I really like Jamie's sister Jenny.

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter and Diana Gabaldon ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Oh yes.......exquisite as always. Love Diana's story but love the way Davina captures and protrays each charactor.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed, I cried, I set on the edge of my seat.

Any additional comments?

For someone who hasnt listed to all of the books and doesnt really want to but wants to catch up on the story.....this would be the book.

Great Highlander Summation

Free trial of audible & I'm currently watching series now with a friend that had NOT read the books, so it's a great refresher! My goal had ALWAYS been to get ALL the books in the series & extraneous stories in hardcover, as first editions. Still my goal!

Heard it, now I NEED to buy it in hardcover

Great book of various insights into the Outlander books, Starz rendition and author’s background, humor and how her mind works!

Very much fun to hear and understand this authors humor, and creativity.

Overall entertaining for any fan of the series. One star off for sometimes disjointed narration, repetition of some sections and the abrupt ending. Interesting info, however.

A Fine Companion for Fans

Nice recap of the series up to these books. Great to have more insight and detail into character. Diana is clearly a great story teller with well thought out moments. I love the great thought that goes into why the characters did what they did. This consistently has probably been why her books are so successful. She does talk a little about the Starz series in this updated version too.

This volume summarizes the first 4 books in the Outlander series….a good review when you haven’t read them in a while. There are several differences from the TV show that stand out.
The commentary by Diana is interesting. A few of her stories about fan letters are laugh out loud funny! Her explanation of her writing process is insightful and makes sense. She does talk rather fast though. I found slowing the speed to 1 level below average helpful.
I think having the physical book is more helpful to view the charts and illustrations in person, rather than in a pdf.
Regardless of the drawbacks, it is an entertaining listen for fans of the books and the TV show.

#writinginfirst person starts with 'I...' I did enjoy the background book about how #DianaGabaldon brought to life Clair's life and adventures as well as insight as to piecing together thoughts into a book.

I really enjoyed hearing from Diana on her thoughts and feedback from various readers. I giggled to myself several times because it's very apparent where Claire got her attitude!

Diana Gaboldon never disappoints!

I've been rereading everything outlander from beginning to end of reading big book number nine, tell the bees that I am gone which I will be starting Christmas morning as the audiobook and the heart cover book or my gift to myself this holiday. I can't wait to sit down just the day after tomorrow start reading a quarter scenario. The whole series speaks to my heart as I grew up in upstate New York and have spent much time and even lived in a few of the city engine including my current residents in Saratoga, just a few miles from the original century village is now called schuylerville and spent several class trips visiting historical places like the Saratoga battlefield and fort Ticonderoga.
