About this listen

Western civilization is under attack. At universities and in the media, professors and pundits decry Western civilization as exploitative, destructive, and without value. But fear not: coming to its defense is this "P.I." guide to Western civilization.

Using historical evidence, Professor Anthony Esolen knocks down the relativist arguments and shows how the West laid the cornerstones for all of modern civilization, including historical, artistic, and intellectual achievements.

We owe it to history and to ourselves to acknowledge Western civilization's role in shaping our values and our world.

Excellent exploration of the ideas and trends that got us here, and hope for the future

I've been recommended many books by Esolen, but this is the first I've gotten around to reading. A fantastic exploration of the culture and foundations of western civilization. I need to re read slowly and take notes this time, it's very rich, and sometimes the connections/quotes/concepts come so quickly and closer together that I can't follow my own thoughts if I want to keep going to follow Esolen. Great read, and an important read for our time.

Makes me Love America, Europe, and the West

It’s interesting engaging and full of insights that lead one to appreciate the treasure that has western civilization. Despite much apparent decline Anthony Esolen gives hope for its revival to those who live in the PC West.

I know literature very well. and this a fine overview of ideas that helped engender or were produced by these books.

Like his unflinching and frank arguments within scope of this book, and his willingness to state clearly his ideological and theological perspective.

History as it should be told.

A penetrating analysis of history, and how it's lessons have been distorted. He looks carefully at what and why we are in the moral mess we are in today.

Of all the politically incorrect guides I have read, this is one of them

This book makes many of the same historic, political, and religious arguments as the other politically incorrect guides with more of a tendency to wax poetic, citing various historic writers and thinkers as it suits the author’s purposes. Overall an engaging and entertaining read which, as usual, occasionally ventures into fringe conservative territory in its theses, though this remains the exception not the rule. Furthermore the author does almost seem to contradict himself in his notion that some principles should take precedence over individual freedom and choice while arguing against authoritarian coercion. Performed well with a professional tone and no major mistakes in pronunciation. Worth a read for fans of the series though you will likely recognize most stats, facts, and arguments from other PIG titles.

A Healthy Corrective

It may be politically incorrect but in a sick and dying body politic, it is a necessary corrective! We’ll done!!

insightful book read by a terrific reader.

Professor Esolen has written a gem that reminds us of the foundations of the Judeo-Christian West. While he notes that these foundations have been gravely shaken in the past few hundred years, he is still hopeful for it.
