Publisher's summary

What if the woman you loved was the one person you could never be with? Elizabeth Grayson doesn't want a bodyguard. She's worked hard for her normal life, but her father, the founder of a booming seafood empire, is a prime target for his unethical competitors. When her father hires a bodyguard for Elizabeth, she's less than enthusiastic...that is, until she meets the mysterious Layne O'Connell. Sarcastic, charming, and secretive, Layne is hired to keep Elizabeth safe. But protecting her heart wasn't in the job description. Elizabeth's father has been keeping secrets from her, and she's soon going to find out that her family is stranger than she could ever have imagined: she's descended from vampires. When Layne reveals her true nature, Elizabeth's world is thrown upside down. Because Elizabeth has fallen for the one person she can't be with: the brooding werewolf who was charged with keeping her alive. Part heart-pounding mystery, part epic romance, the novel The Protector will leave you spellbound.

Good but slow

I loved a Knight to Remember so I was.excited to see another Bridget Essex book. the plot was good enough to keep me wanting to know what's going on but the pacing was off a bit. I found myself getting impatient or thinking you've described that 10 times already.. Elizabeth's inner monologue dragged on and the rest zipped by like a roller coaster. Maybe next time more dialogue to help develop the other characters a bit. Overall good but not the can't put it down feel of Knight to Remember.

Just okay

I agree with one of the other reviewers who commented about the MC’s endless running inner dialogue. Who stops to describe a house’s furnishings in the middle of a tense fight scene???
The MC worked my last nerve with her constant “someone just tell me what’s going on” pleas. I hit the fast forward button more times than I can count to wade through the repetitive dialogue. The author comes up with great stories and it’s a shame she can’t let the action move along at a better pace.

Needed editing

Nice romance with plenty of suspense and battles of good vs evil. But this novel should lose a fifth of the words possibly a quarter. Too many details are repeated, feelings and thoughts are told repeatedly in the same paragraph. The narration is excellent, five stars

Okay Story Narrator Helps A lot

The store was good if you like the whole " star-across lovers " mix with the fancy and thrill that Bridget Essex puts in her books. Stephanie Murphy was great made every detail visible and easy to follow over all a good story

Until the Creature Was a Woman Standing or Attacki

I applaud Ms. Essex's youthful blend of lesbian and paranormal romance. Ms. Murphy did a mostly great job narrating. There were only two sound editing issues in the parts to which I consciously listened. I LOVED Raised by Wolves, also authored by Ms. Essex. Though not a fan of the narrators of the Knight series, with only hints at intimacy, the Knight series is passable YA. With Protector, though, some of the scene description kept bugging me. Rant commencing heretofore:

"flopped into the chair" followed closely by the same character sitting in the chair. In my mind, the character would have to get up to get down. The concert hall, backstage hallway scene was awkward with the action sequence of the darkly clad, hooded character racing toward Elizabeth, then just stopping to remove her coat/cloak and escort Elizabeth on stage.

Where I stopped listening after being annoyed by action inconsistencies in the lovemaking scene... Why can't the boy shorts come down with the jeans? Why does the author like having her characters in this and her other works have through-panty or after navigating moving fabric to the side?

The next morning, Elizabeth turns to find not Lane but a creature staring at her. Lane's involved in a silent tangle with a woman. The stranger woman looks up at Elizabeth to show off her elongated incisors. Is the woman the creature? Is the creature fighting with lane or just showing off? Is such a fight supposed to be silent, except for the staring? How can Lane's get-back-vibe be so powerful in her leather jacket stretched to bursting, but not when she's half dressed? Sorry. Rant concluded...

ehhh

I give it a 3 star because it is lesfic and I need more of it in my life... but, the characters are so ANNOYINGLY WHINY... towards the end of the book it gets worse. and while I like the seductive sexy voice of Stephanie Murphy she truly brought out the best (meaning the whining) of the characters. And she reads very fast. overall story is not bad.

overall, eh not bad kept me up late.
