About this listen
One thousand years ago in the valley of Kashmir, a great Tantric master named Ksemaraja wrote his masterpiece: the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya, which means "The Essence of the Recognition Philosophy" - recognition, that is, of oneself as a direct expression of the universal divine Consciousness. Recognition also that this Consciousness is, in truth, all that exists, and that its five fundamental powers of awareness, enjoyment, willing, knowing, and acting are the sacred endowments of every sentient being.
The Pratyabhijna-hrdaya was a concise primer, written to introduce spiritual seekers to the Recognition philosophy in less formally philosophical, more approachable language. What Ksemaraja created turned out to be one of the world's great spiritual masterpieces, breathtaking in its brevity but stunning in its power. It came to be considered equivalent to scripture itself by later generations, because of its undeniable inspiration.
One of the most powerful and revelatory spiritual masterpieces of world history, the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya is one of the primary sources for the study and practice of nondual Tantrik Yoga, and it has never been accurately translated or fully explained until now. Christopher Wallis, author of Tantra Illuminated: The Philosophy, History, and Practice of a Timeless Tradition, expounds the subtleties of this spiritual and philosophical classic.

Story
In his third book, Tantric philosopher and Oxford scholar Dr. Christopher Wallis calls out the seemingly helpful spiritual platitudes dominating our current culture and demonstrates how these "near-truths" can stand in the way of a more radically free and meaningful life—and ultimately, a deeper spiritual awakening. Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, Wallis’s book uncovers why these oft-heard clichés are “near enemies of the truth" that can distract us from real spirituality, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

Treasured by Buddhists of all traditions, The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. This text has been studied, practiced, and expounded upon in an unbroken tradition for centuries, first in India, and later in Tibet. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the Bodhisattvas - those who renounce the peace of individual enlightenment and vow to work for the liberation of all beings.

Reverse Meditation is for anyone who wants to bring the challenges of life onto the path of awakening. When things get hard, it’s time to turn your practice on its head—and throw out any assumption that meditation exists to insulate you from the confusion, difficulties, and uncertainty of life. “By putting your meditation into reverse,” Holecek teaches, “you’ll actually find yourself going forward. Step into your pain and you can step up your evolution.”

Story
In this book of key spiritual teachings from unpublished discourses, the great Advaita Master, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, teaches us that we are not limited to the body. Because of our mistaken body identity, we feel separate from what we truly are. Our identification with the body and mind subjects us to endless cycles of pleasure and pain, desire and fear, which cause us to search beyond ourselves for that which we believe we lack.

Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness is a series of meditation practices on Emptiness, a particular aspect of the Buddha's teachings. The idea is that by beginning with one's first rather coarse commonsense understanding, one progresses through increasingly subtle and more refined stages until one arrives at complete and perfect understanding. Each stage in the process prepares the mind for the next in so far as each step is fully integrated into one's understanding through the meditation process.

Patrul Rinpoche makes the technicalities of his subject accessible through a wealth of stories, quotations, and references to everyday life. His style of mixing broad colloquialisms, stringent irony, and poetry has all the life and atmosphere of an oral teaching.

Story
A ground-breaking book, The Magic of Vajrayana opens new doors to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of Vajrayana, one of the most vibrant traditions of mystical practice in the world today. In simple clear English, McLeod deploys his considerable skills as a writer, translator, and teacher to immerse the listener in the practice of Vajrayana. He bridges the gap between classical instruction and idealized descriptions of understandings, as well as the cultural gap between medieval Tibet and modern Western society.

Story
A single purpose lies at the heart of all the great religious traditions: awakening to the astonishing reality of the true nature of ourselves and the universe. At the same time, through centuries of cultural accretion and focus on myth and ritual as ends in themselves, this core insight has become obscured. Here Ken Wilber provides a path for reenvisioning a religion of the future that acknowledges the evolution of humanity in every realm while remaining faithful to that original spiritual vision.

As the classical treatise on the Hindu understanding of mind and consciousness and on the technique of meditation, it has exerted immense influence over the religious practices of Hinduism in India and, more recently, in the West.

Story
Based on a series of talks given by Chögyam Trungpa during the first session of what was to become Naropa University, Cynicism and Magic introduces key Tibetan Buddhist concepts, including karma, the structure of ego, the paramitas, and the bodhisattva. Employing a unique and intimate teaching style, Trungpa Rinpoche presents these concepts in a larger framework of questions we all have: What is authentic spirituality? Can I find enlightenment and freedom? How should I approach life, death, suffering, and boredom? How can I develop some discipline, patience, and sanity?

When Autobiography of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. The New York Times hailed it as "a rare account". Newsweek pronounced it "fascinating". The San Francisco Chronicle declared, "Yogananda presents a convincing case for yoga, and those who 'came to scoff' may remain 'to pray." Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East.

However, The Recognition Sutras struck a chord in me and helped me to see my situation from a different angle. I began to reframe my life and circumstances and realized that despite all the hardships I’m going through, I’m somehow in a better place than I was before everything happened. In other words, my circumstances lead me to the spiritual path I’m on and connected me with people who have been nothing short of supportive.
In the book, Ksemaraja breaks down Recognition philosophy and gives various yuktis or actions one can take to deconstruct false views of reality, which we all have. He makes somewhat abstruse concepts about the nature of reality accessible and applicable to daily life. The texts also gives ways one can ‘digest’ and therefore assimilate and in a sense transmute traumatic emotions, which I found Challenging but life changing.
What I especially love about Ksemaraja’s work and tantrik philosophy in general is how it doesn’t assign blame or condemn people, no matter how lost many of us are in our mine constructed worlds. It helps one to lovingly assess one’s vikalpas or stories about life and help one to shift to seeing things sans a filter, where awareness is predominant and untainted by the mind’s stories. It feels like the original self love movement while also not letting us accept our screwed ‘stories’.
Hareesh’s translation is exquisite and his commentary is ( in my opinion) as valuable as the original text itself. I highly recommend reading Tantra Illuminated in addition to The Recognition Sutras as it gives a helpful, in depth yet not overwhelming overview of tantrick philosophy’s sects/sampradayas.
I truly hope more people discover this book and read it often. I own it in all formats and I’ve listened to the audiobook four times, especially before I meditate. I study the book daily and feel that every time I read it or listen to Hareesh’s narration, I marinate my mind in powerful thoughts about the nature of reality and where I/We fit into it. I feel less lost and more hopeful.
I honestly can’t wait for Hareesh to translate and publish more tantrik texts!
The most powerful book I’ve ever read

Sooo many concepts we're being advised to accept, along with interpretations by various people... "supported" by bible verses here, quantum physics there... yet ultimately nonsensical to our day to day existence, leaving us with a good deal of magical thinking: "Illusion," "creating your own reality", "everything that happens to you is your choice" etc. With his excellent grasp of the Sanskrit language, the author illuminates the truths within the manuscript, as well as our related misconceptions. Each time your mind says, "but wait, how..." Wallis is already there to address the question. Sanskrit is teaming with nuances and levels of clarity barely addressed in our day to day language, and Wallis is fantastic at translating. He gently puts the nail in the coffin on the misguided "this world doesn't really exist" philosophy -- (thank you! so tired of hearing that without proper checks on all the grandiose & delusional baggage that comes with it). Concepts such as oneness, illusion, free will, and creating your own reality do apply, but Wallis gives the how/why/when -- the limitations of applying these ideas to our everyday world, and the way to Recognize what you are participating in creating, and from where it's coming.
Wonderful! Finally, it all makes perfect sense.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
I especially love how Wallis' passion for understanding these teachings shines through in his writing and in the audible recording. It's rare to find a scholar who is also a practitioner and who is also deeply dedicated to understanding the real practice of yoga. This book is enlightening, refreshing, and my go-to text for grounding and spiritual support.
Awakening and profound!
