Publisher's summary

Bloomsbury presents The Rose Legacy by Jessica Day George, read by Helen Keeley.

This sweeping, emotionally-resonant fantasy from beloved author Jessica Day George is perfect for fans of Princess Academy and Black Beauty.

When orphaned Anthea Cross-Thornley receives a letter from a long-lost uncle, she wonders if she will finally find a true home. But she is shocked to learn that her uncle secretly breeds horses—animals that have been forbidden in her kingdom for centuries. More alarming is Anthea’s strange ability to sense the horses' thoughts and feelings, an ancient gift called The Way. Confused and terrified, Anthea is desperate to leave, but when her family and kingdom are put at risk, can she embrace The Way and the exciting future it might bring her?

Book is fun narrator is overly dramatic

My family enjoyed this book. We plan to finish the series by reading it instead of listening to it. The narrator was overly dramatic and made most of the females emotional and flighty.

Updated throwback

When Mary O'Hara published My Friend Flicka in 1941, little did she know that in merely a couple generations, dragons would displace horses. You know, intelligent, telepathic, heroic. Sandra Day George has now retired the dragons (she does know them well) reinstating horses, giving them the upgrade. Kristen Britain's Green Rider would be a good follow-on for horse lovers, less telepathy. I was loving this story, until the iron horse from Wild, Wild West showed up. Anyway, this series-initial story holds promise. Book two is in my queue and three in my cart.
