About this listen

The French Revolution is at the height of its fury. Daily, hundreds of aristocratic heads fall from the guillotine. Emotions run high, and anyone suspected of sympathy toward the nobility is in mortal danger. Only one man is daring enough to lead a small band against popular opinion - the Scarlet Pimpernel. Using masterful disguises and clever strategies, the Scarlet Pimpernel smuggles noblemen and women from France to safety in England. His success is a thorn in the side of the Revolution. As he vanishes from each escapade, he leaves no trace behind except an image of the colorful flower that is his emblem. The Scarlet Pimpernel must be stopped at all costs. But who is he?

This enduring classic is filled with wonderful layers of intrigue and dashing courage. As the cunning hero, and the beautiful woman who loves him, move toward a final victory, the quickened pace is enhanced by Steven Crossley’s dramatic narration.

I have always loved the story and love it still. The narrator did a great job of portraying Sir Percy Blakeney but did not capture Marguerite that well, which really detractrd from the quality of the story.

Classic story, Marguerite's voice was annoying

This is one of my favorite books. Stephen Crossly improves it. If only he could have done the rest of the series.

A great narrator.

This is a dramatic story, enjoyable to listen to, and, fortunately, today women are considered on more equal terms with men.

Enjoyable classic

the story is timeless and a great read/listen! However the narrator brings it alive. Will listen again soon because he did such a great job.

Outstanding Narrator

Good, wholesome, fun. Lovely accents and voices. A bit and expectedly dramatic, and unexpectedly antimodern.

Well read.

Would you listen to The Scarlet Pimpernel again? Why?

Of course!
This book has it all: Adventure, Love, Deceit, and is an overall wonderful story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Percy Blakeney.
Although he seems dull-witted and boring, his passion is only kept in check. The story around this fellow unfolds and the reader will understand my choice once they have read the book.

Which character – as performed by Stephen Crossly – was your favorite?

Percy Blakeney again.
The performance brought out the English gentleman's lazy habits through speech.
To bring the mannerisms and lifestyle into a voice is a remarkable gift.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!
I have read the book several times, and will again.
The performance definitely helped the story come alive in my mind.

Any additional comments?

I love this book, have read it several times, and will do so again.
This audio adaptation is amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Entertaining every time I read it!
