Couldn't put it down

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it was a really good mystery and it kept you guessing until the very end.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sex Club?

Some of the inforamation Kayla found online about the "Bible Group"

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Done a better job with changing into another character. It took a few beats before you noticed the change.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I just really liked it. I'm a mystery nut and this was a really good one as I wasn't able to figure out who done it until it was quite obvious until the end. I had many guesses but they would never pan out.

Any additional comments?

The title is a little scary but unfortunately it is a good one. There is no explicit sex acts written in this book which I liked. Only what evidence they found on a body would let you guess.

Entertaining & Thought Provoking

Where does The Sex Club rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the first book in the Detective Jackson Series by L.J. Sellers. It is chock full of modern day societal issues: teenage sex, Iraq war casualties, & pro-life extremists. Sellers doesn't sugar-coat any of them. It's a hard-hitting novel that makes you think a lot about today's society. This was a GREAT read!

What did you like best about this story?

I loved Sellers' writing style. I immediately connected with the characters. Even those whose viewpoints I didn't agree with were portrayed in a way that made me understand their motives. Some of the answers are handed to us, others come about in a couple of great twists toward the end. The topic is controversial but, in my opinion, handled incredibly well.

Which scene was your favorite?

A young girl is found dead in a dumpster and Detective Jackson in Eugene, Oregon has to try to solve the mystery. At the same time there is a bomb that goes off at a Planned Parenthood clinic and the dead girl had just left, is there a connection?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The sex is not explicit and the violence is not explicit, so I'm not sure Hollywood would embrace it. I would LOVE to see this in a movie though :-) .

Slow but building action

This was a bit slow going at the beginning, but after awhile I got into the author’s rhythm. She builds the story one idea, one piece of real or virtual evidence at a time. The “action” parts didn’t get my heart going. I was never yelling at the book telling a character to stop doing this or call so-and-so right now. But, while not heartracingly dramatic, I still felt an impact for each event.

It did take a lot of pretending I didn’t notice things that police would never have been allowed to do. But that was ok once I realized it was not just one huge error but was all through the book. I was then able to relax about all of it.

Narrator really worked for me. There was enough variety for the large number of characters, and the main characters’ voices were consistent. There were a couple times that the narrator seemed to miss the adjective, saying something with anger when the sentence said something like “he said calmly”.

Disturbing/ narrated well

the narrator was excellent! Being a mother and grandmother the story was disturbing but well written. I would like to read more about Jackson and his daughter and Kira. 👍

Nice Book....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, easy listening

Any additional comments?

A bit predictable, but still a good listen. They played it safe with his daughter. Could have been more drama there.

Surprisingly good

This was a total surprise. I had been put off by the cover and the title for some time, but as it was part of Kindle Unlimited, I finally decided to give it a go. It turned out to be a really well written, engaging crime / police procedural. It introduces Detective Jackson, father of a teenage daughter and recently separated from his wife, who is called in to investigate a bombing at a Planned Parenthood clinic. Then the body of a teenage girl who had visited the clinic is found murdered. Is there a connection? This was well plotted, had believable characters, kept me engaged throughout and had enough twists to keep it from being predictable. A really interesting story! I am so glad I picked this up and will definitely read the other titles in this series.
The narration was ok, but could have been improved by differentiating the different characters' voices more.

Good Story but a bit too political for my taste!

3.5 Stars for me!

This is a tough one for me as there is so much good in the story but it was weighed down by the political leanings of the author. I usually try to avoid books in which the author spends time building up one side while tearing down the other as we get way too much of that every day.

If you don't like Planned Parenthood to the point of anger, you might want to skip this story. I know that they do provide many good services for women and appreciate the fact that they provide lots of low cost health care.

The villain is over the top nuts but that is what makes her so creepy. The author does look down on conservatives and, unfortunately paints with a broad brush. Lots of us conservatives are fiscal and are socially moderate... Me.

The author does a very good job of giving a wake up call to parents about the sexual pressure on Middle School kids and how easy it is to get them to follow the crowd. She also does give a few commercials for Planned Parenthood but does not preach about abortions. Her focus is on the health, welfare, safety and security of the patients.

I am hopeful that she tempers the political nature of the next books as I need my escape.
