About this listen

When Shamur Uskevren, the matriarch of one of Sembia's oldest and most powerful merchant families, is tricked by an angry wizard into an assassination attempt on her own husband, her family is thrown into turmoil. Once the truth is discovered, she and her husband must struggle to save their family and stop the sorcerer. But in her anger, she has forgotten one thing: in the world of intrigue and deception, of shadows and lies that is Sembia, nothing is ever what it seems.

Good story, average narration

Byers writes a good story, but the narrator needs to study unfamiliar words. Her characterizations were good, but mispronounced some names and some words. Especially "poleaxe". It's an issue I've heard with other titles in this genre, especially Forgotten Realms books.

Actually a really good story!

I didn’t know if I would like this book or not. But honestly it’s probably one of my new favorites to hear. Really it was 5/5!

Painful to listen to

The story itself is well-written and fits neatly into the series. However, the narration was simply atrocious. The narrator sounded like she was reading a romance novel. I did everything I could to cover as much of the book as possible reading it on my Kindle so as not to subject myself to the narrator.

In summary my recommendation is to read this book and not listen to it.

Better than expected..

The author and narrator did a fantastic job with this story. I am big E. Cale fan and was wondering if Paul Kemp would only be able to satisfy this storyline. Great surprise!!

Good story poor narrator.

You can tell that the narrator is not a fan of the forgotten realms novels. She narrates the book really choppy and mispronounces many words that are familiar to most forgotten realms enthusiast.

Fun fast paced story.

Story was fun and fast paced. Narrator was OK, but sometimes seemed not familiar with the genre.

Ok story but narration brings it down

The story is not bad, but I wasn't a fan of the narration. I think Ms. Suheyla El Attar was a poor choice for this particular book. Her pronunciation and characterization seemed exaggerated at times, shattering immersion. My recommendation is to skip this one and get the Kindle version instead. I was planning on listening to the whole series on Audible, but I will skip the next books in the series read by this person.
