About this listen

A pragmatic framework for nonprofit digital transformation that embraces the human-centered nature of your organization

In The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human-Centered in an Automated World, a team of dedicated nonprofit thought leaders delivers a discussion of the information and tools nonprofit staffers and board members need to effectively use artificial intelligence without alienating the human stakeholders and donors on whom they rely.

Each chapter of the book offers a narrative discussion of how AI affects a particular functional area in an organization that includes case studies and practical tips for the ethical use of AI. You'll discover explorations of:

  • The steps you need to take to become a smart nonprofit and how to effectively lead a digitally transformed organization
  • How to automate program delivery, fundraising, and the back office
  • Likely future developments in AI for nonprofit work, including a more diverse field of programmers and data scientists and data sovereignty

Perfect for nonprofit leaders, board members, employees, managers, and founders, The Smart Nonprofit also belongs on the book shelves of anyone interested in the intersection of leadership and technology.

Persuasive and Actionable

Pros:
Evidence-based, verifiable facts and references both known and new technologies. Helps to explain in practical terms what various algorithms are doing for different projects.
Very persuasive call to action, and appeals well to the target audience (nonprofits). It also includes a lot of practical actionable examples of implementation.
I really appreciated the new references and resources throughout the book, and the gentle introduction to new terminology.
Personally, I am particularly enamored with their subscription to the idea of microtransactions where individuals can control and potentially farm out their own data, rather than us being mined for data without permission, and then charged for the result. Seems highly unlikely given the current political environment but I can appreciate the dream.

Cons:
I'm still not positive that this will be sufficient for my nonprofit to take action. A lot of the recommendations are drastic changes to How We Do Things. Historically, that hasn't gone over well. But I will absolutely try my best to get senior leadership to at least read the book and start thinking about it.
That said, while I find the suggestions actionable and potentially practical, a lot of it will hinge on if a nonprofit can properly leverage a spot in a nonprofit data collaborative. If that cannot be done, then smaller nonprofits will not be able to implement, and larger ones will be more skeptical.

Overall, this was easy to listen to, an enjoyable experience, and very stimulating, both for my nonprofit passion and intellectually. I highly recommend this book, and sincerely hope to see it's vision realized.
