Publisher's summary

If you think money can’t buy happiness, you’re not spending it right. Two rising stars in behavioral science explain how money can buy happiness - if you follow five core principles of smarter spending.

Happy Money offers a tour of new research on the science of spending. Most people recognize that they need professional advice on how to earn, save, and invest their money. When it comes to spending that money, most people just follow their intuitions. But scientific research shows that those intuitions are often wrong.

Happy Money explains why you can get more happiness for your money by following five principles, from choosing experiences over stuff to spending money on others. And the five principles can be used not only by individuals but by companies seeking to create happier employees and provide “happier products” to their customers. Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton show how companies from Google to Pepsi to Crate & Barrel have put these ideas into action.

Very repetitive.

Very repetitive. At times boring. Could be cut in half and still have the same massage.

A good guide to getting the bang for your buck

This book not only encourages to spend in a manner that makes you happy but also tells you how to spend on things that matter.

Most information here is practical, insightful and easy to understand what

Funny, too long. Loved the main points.

I love the main points. The hook felt a bit long and much of it was common sense. I disagreed with many of the micro conclusions the authors came to. I had to listen to this at 2.5x speed to get through it. I loved the jokes and witty ness of the authors, but this could have probably been half as long.

Good book, but could have been longer

Happy Money is a easily read book, with lots of stories and anecdotes. I enjoyed a lot while driving my car and felt sorry for finishing it. The science of smart spending resumes itself into 5 principles: 1st -buy Experiences; 2nd Make it a Treat; 3rd Buy Time
4th Pay Now, Consume Later and finally 5th Invest in Others. Although these principles are extensively outlined in the book, I thought it still lacked something else: maybe length, maybe five more principles.

Useful Info for a Better Life

Great info using relatable examples. I see this book as a supplement to other knowledge about how to use cash. I listened to this because of Tony Robbins' book Money Master the Game. He mentioned this in a late chapter but pretty much summarized the main points in his book. Still a great use of my attention!

Bravo to the narrator!

The narrator made this a lot of fun but so did the casual writing style of Harvard branded research. I hope the authors consider a follow up soon!

Quick, fun, and insightful

Went by quickly with some funny quips. Should be useful information! I'd recommend it, why not.

Interesting research, meandering conclusions

Hated the narrator's voice, and his delivery of the humor was painfully bad. Sweeping takeaways from isolated studies, not inspiring, not motivating. Find another book on philanthropy and giving if that's what you're interested in.

Narrator is amazing

Brings out the subtle humor of the book so well - recommend purely off the narrator

OK not great

Light hearted. A little simple and lacking in hard facts. The authors quote experiments but the experiments tend to be of short term duration. Some evidence that these strategies lead to life long increases in happiness would be nice.
