About this listen

Screams ring out in a madhouse as a man shoots his best friend in cold blood. What drives him to such a desperate act? Greed? Jealousy? Madness? Or a woman? A woman said to have mystical powers, in league with the darkest forces of the cosmos? Is the gunman’s testimony the invention of a calculating killer, or is he another victim of a supreme evil that lurks unseen among us?

the performance of this story is just delightful. I this is the second story I've heard done by this group and would recommend it for all the work and skill they put forth into such a beautiful execution.

Another Superb HPLHS Experience

If you are new to the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, just click buy. Use the credit or pay the small fee. The Society produces the finest audio recordings of Lovecraft's works as well as these exceptional Dark Adventure Radio Theater. It doesn't matter if you are acquainted with his works or not. The superb production will frighten and entertain you. Exceptional voice talent, music, sound effects lend atmosphere which has you on the edge of your seat. Why this talented group hasn't won Audie awards is beyond me, but they should. I've listened to many company radio dramas, and the HPLHS is simply the best period. The tension, horror and surprise ending are all shocking due to the truly exceptional voice talent. I'm collecting them all. If you are also interested in hearing the stories narrated, the HPLHS also has produced complete audio recordings of all of his works and collaborations.

Old story, new life!

This is one of Lovecraft’s lesser-known stories, but HPLHS and DART really bring it front and center with new framing sequences and snappy dialogue.

Brilliant performance, emotionally shattering in every way

One simply can't get enough of HPLHS's radio drama adaptations, and this one, from the framing device to the performance of the actors, has absolutely nailed it in every aspect. I was already familiar with the story, read it in text form and heard it in audiobook form, but was still utterly driven to experience all the anticipation, the tension and the dread by this production as if I'm reading it for the first time. HPLHS's productions managed to get rid of all the little drawbacks of HPL's prose style and structural choices, while emphasizing all the right emotional impacts of his stories. Bravo.
If I absolutely have to point out one thing I didn't like, it might be the casting of Asenath. Sounds too deep and oldish for someone in the body of a young woman, and I had a slightly hard time sustaining my disbelief even on her first appearance in the story. I suppose it was an intentional choice by the production team to signify her character background, but it suits her later appearances in the story more than her first.
Other than that, absolutely perfect adaptation and I recommend it highly.
