Publisher's summary

What will separate you from the rest early in your career? The ability to take ownership, manage expectations, navigate people dynamics, and communicate professionally - skills that school doesn't teach.

Most career guides assume that you already know how the working world works. But if you're starting your very first job or taking a job in a new company, you might not know all the unspoken rules that determine who gets ahead and who doesn't. In The Unspoken Rules, you'll learn the basic workplace skills necessary for success.

From the author: "Over the last four years, I've interviewed over 500 interns, early career professionals, managers, and executives.... My conversations revolved around three key topics:

  • What are the most common mistakes early-career professionals make at work?
  • What would you do differently if you could relive your first years on the job?
  • What do you think separates top performers from mediocre ones?

After testing the advice I gathered from these hundreds of interviews, I started coaching other early-career professionals. Now I'm distilling everything I've learned into a step-by-step guide called The Unspoken Rules."

Informative

I found this book very helpful as I emerge into a more corporate career. While I am not specifically in the corporate world, the unspoken rules taught in the book are applicable and useful in my current career path.

Everything a young professional needs to know (and otherwise would spend 5 years learning)

The title says it all. As I listened to this book, time and time again I thought to myself, “I wish I had this book 10 years ago when I started my career”. There are so many valuable insights that young professionals have to pick up implicitly or passively, and may not pick up until they’ve already lost valuable opportunities and significant career momentum. I am going to be sharing this with all of my students and recommending it for years to come.

I've now added this book to my list for must read.

Gorrick does a brilliant job of discussing the many unspoken rules that exist in most professional, and all corporate settings. I have now added this to the vetted list of Kadima Careers Top Book Recommendations. The only downside of the audio book is that there were often references to tables and images that were not adequately explained for those of us who just listen to books.

Fantastic peak and crash course into navigating the corporate environment

Fantastic knowledge source overall. I especially appreciate the storytelling nature, similar to How to Win Friends and Influence People.
My feedback are the following:
-The narration isn't fantastic. He reads relatively fast with long pauses, making it feel slow on normal speed, but too fast and hard to hear on even 1.2x.
-While he does acknowledge bias (including gender and race), the author doesn't really do much to explain just how much that can impact somebody's treatment and experience. I guess that's a conversation for another book.
