About this listen
Mike Malloy’s hedge fund is more than just a money machine - it’s a weapon of insight, capable of forecasting global events with chilling accuracy.
When Mike’s proprietary software predicts an inevitable conflict between the United States and China, he faces an impossible choice: exploit the knowledge to secure unimaginable wealth, or risk everything to avert a nuclear war.
As financial markets teeter on the brink and global tensions escalate, Mike finds himself at the crossroads of ethics and ambition. With his closest allies questioning his every move and powerful enemies circling, he must decide - will he become the savior of humanity or the architect of its destruction?
In The Win Machine, Ryan McBeth delivers a gripping techno-thriller that explores the terrifying power of technology, the dangers of unchecked ambition, and the razor-thin line between profit and catastrophe. As the countdown to global annihilation ticks away, the ultimate question emerges: How far would you go to win?

Long before the waterboarding controversy exploded in the media, one CIA agent had already gone public. In a groundbreaking 2007 interview with ABC News, John Kiriakou called waterboarding torture - but admitted that it probably worked. This book, at once a confessional, an adventure story, and a chronicle of Kiriakou's life in the CIA, stands as an important, eloquent piece of testimony from a committed American patriot.

Story
The British Empire was the largest in all history: the nearest thing to global domination ever achieved. The world we know today is in large measure the product of Britain's age of empire. The global spread of capitalism, telecommunications, the English language, and the institutions of representative government - all these can be traced back to the extraordinary expansion of Britain's economy, population, and culture from the 17th century until the mid-20th. On a vast and vividly colored canvas, Empire shows how the British Empire acted as midwife to modernity.

Story
For centuries, men and women have manned lighthouses to ensure the safe passage of ships. It is a lonely job and a thankless one for the most part. Until something goes wrong. Until a ship is in distress. In the twenty-third century, this job has moved into outer space. A network of beacons allows ships to travel across the Milky Way at many times the speed of light. These beacons are built to be robust. They never break down. They never fail. At least, they aren’t supposed to.

But both history and China's current trajectory suggest that this rivalry will reach its moment of maximum danger in the 2020s. The Chinese challenge will most likely prove more manageable than many pessimists currently believe—but during the 2020s, the pace of Sino-American conflict will accelerate, and the prospect of war will be frighteningly real.

Known for providing incisive progressive political analysis without being dogmatic, popular radio and podcast host David Pakman delves into the vicious cycle of reactionary political ideology. It's no secret how the right-wing has benefited and capitalized off disinformation and polarization of US politics. Critical thinking and media literacy are on a rapid decline, and our republic is unable to agree upon a shared set of facts. Pakman challenges the right-wing head-on and encourages listeners to understand how the status quo became the status quo.

"DAMN THE VALLEY" was a phrase regularly uttered by the men that spent any amount of time in the Arghandab River Valley during the deployment of 2 Fury to Afghanistan in 2009-2010. The valley has claimed bodies from the troops of Alexander the Great, the British Empire, and more recently, the Russian Army. Operating in the valley was like nothing the men could have envisaged, they called it the "meat grinder." It was a deployment that the media didn't talk about, and the government doesn't acknowledge.

Story
When we talk about human history, we often focus on great leaders, population forces, and decisive wars. But how has the earth itself determined our destiny? Our planet wobbles, driving changes in climate that forced the transition from nomadism to farming. Mountainous terrain led to the development of democracy in Greece. Atmospheric circulation patterns later on shaped the progression of global exploration, colonization, and trade. Even today, voting behavior in the southeast United States ultimately follows the underlying pattern of 75 million-year-old sediments from an ancient sea.

An okay first novel.
I like Ryan's analysis online and the concept intrigued me so I figured I'd give it a try.
Overall it excelled where I expected. the technical and military mix.
What lacked was overall character development and clunky writing. A bit too much detail on random things. The characters kind of felt flat and 1D but that could have been just as much the narrators flat performance. The book also jumped in time in several places and it would have been nice to have a better indicator on the elapsed period.
A personal like would have been more detail on the war itself and the use of the Win Machine in it.
Over all a 3.5 out of 5. I hope he writes more as his unique background makes for interesting concepts. Just a decent freshman novel look forward to the sophomore attempt.

Worth the listen
For an assumed first novel this is very good. Easy listen but keeps you engaged.

Good book
The book has a great stoy from today's time. The the story is believable and is a little short. Hope the see more from Ryan McBeth.

Surprised about accuracy of science: Cool story
I am a big fan of the expeditionary force series by Craig Alanson. For those who follow the series know what it is like to wait for the next book in the series.
After listening to to war machine for an hour I realized it was worth my time

Too short
I want more! So good!!! Normal authors don’t have the breadth of experience and knowledge to supply the great details to create such a plot. We want more. Can’t wait!

Plausible science fiction not too far into the future
What would you do if you had all the answers? What if you could see the future with certainty? This novel tries to answer the questions with an unique story filled with greed, gambling and patriotism! Truly a great read/listen.
