About this listen

2019 Hudson Booksellers Best of the Year

The serial killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury.

It’s the murder trial of the century. And Joshua Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house - and to be sure the wrong man goes down for the crime. Because this time, the killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury.

But there’s someone on his tail. Former conman turned criminal-defense attorney Eddie Flynn doesn’t believe his movie-star client killed two people. He suspects the real killer is closer than they think - but who would guess just how close?

Praise for Thirteen:

“A brilliant, twisty, ingeniously constructed puzzle of a book. Steve Cavanagh pulls off an enviable premise with panache.” (Ruth Ware)

“Outstanding - an intriguing premise, a tense, gripping build-up, and a spectacular climax. This guy is the real deal. Trust me.” (Lee Child)

“A dead bang BEAST of a book that expertly combines Cavanagh’s authority on the law with an absolutely great thrill ride. Books this ingenious don’t come along very often.” (Michael Connelly)

Critic reviews

"Sims portrays the lawyer’s first-person narrative with a hint of a New York accent, while giving the other characters slight distinctions as well. The killer’s chapters are written in third person and underscored with boredom, suggesting someone who’s killed many times and lost the thrill. Passing references are made to characters and situations in the previous books, but this installment stands well on its own. Suggest this title both to those who love a legal thriller where the lawyer does more than practice law and to those who like a solid, twisted serial killer tale without the gory details." Absolutely loved this book. Lots of twist and turns was not predictable. Wasn't "wordy" but made you feel you were there.

Love

the author makes it very interesting since it is not just a novel about a trial but the killer actually getting on the jury. good character development and not seeing how the protagonist can possibly pull this off

well written, great storyline, twist and turns

I really enjoyed this overall. However, towards the end of the story, I was just waiting for Kane to finally get caught. The anticipation was insane!!

This keeps you on your toes the whole time. It’s easy to listen to the whole time and is very well thought out.

Great pace and great plot

OK, so it's farfetched, but most thrillers are. It's still a gripping listen! Two quibbles - the reader needs to work on his southern accent, and the character Cassandra, the jurist who's a student at NYU studying set design? She doesn't work at McDonald's. No NYC student with rich parents, studying set design, works at McDonald's. Ever.

I couldn't stop listening!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I had not listened to the proceeding books in this series prior to this one but it wasn't necessary.
