About this listen

Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he'd proposed, figuring that she'd be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except...she wasn't. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her... and more. Did he think she was mad?

Eloise Bridgerton couldn't marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking...and wondering...and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except...he wasn't. Her perfect husband wouldn't be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled...and when he kissed her...the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn't help but wonder...could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

The Sleeper Bridgerton Book you didn’t know you needed in your life!

This is a sleeper Bridgerton book. I always think I love a half dozen of the other books better but this holds up with the best of them. Eloise has been corresponding with Sir Phillip since the death of his first wife, Marina, when he suddenly suggests they meet and see if they will suit for marriage. Eloise is thrown by this and doesn’t answer... unsure HOW to answer. Until her best friend, Penelope marries her favorite brother very out of the blue and unexpectedly. Suddenly, dreams of growing old together with her spinster best friend go up in flames and she is sort of cast adrift. What does she do now!?! Is the question. Well she runs off to meet Sir Phillip unannounced and unexpected. This is basically where the book begins.

He is NOT was she expect and vice versa. He is desperate to find a good wife to be a good mother to his two rambunctious 8-year-olds but more importantly he is thrilled that Eloise possesses the Joi de vivre that Marina lacked. That comes with a lot of talking and questions but nbd... that doesn’t mean he has to answer any of them, right? Lol. Phillip is a quintessential clueless male and Eloise isn’t afraid to call him on it.

The scenes with the Bridgerton brothers are hilarious and precious - just perfect typical Bridgertons and a breath of fresh air in a story with some very sad themes and plot points. Phillip struggling to be a good dad, coming to terms with how bad his first marriage is, struggling not to become his own terrible father is so poignant and relatable as a parent. This man absolutely needs Eloise, someone who came from a wonderful family, to show him the way and give him some well earned happiness. And the sex scenes were significantly steamier than past books, in fact I think JQ ups her game each book so far!

Love isn’t expected but it definitely blooms and I am still smiling with how happy I am for them.

While I do love a lot about this book it deals with dark themes, depression, and attempted suicide so may not be for everyone. Also, for a relationship that began via letter, I was disappointed to realize that we barely get any of their correspondence throughout that first year - I think that would have added a lot to the romance and build up between the two but it was mentioned only as a way to set up the story, with each chapter containing not a letter between E and P but letters from Eloise to various family members... kinda cute, but letters to and from E and P would have been a much better choice imo. Especially since this is the first Whistledown-less Bridgerton book and the lack is a little sad. We needed more than some random Eloise letters to fill in the gap. Thus 4 instead of 5 stars.

Surprisingly great story!

When I first started this book I wasn’t sure I could connect with the characters and I wasn’t as interested; but once the story picked up I throughly enjoyed this story!

The Bridgerton brothers were hilarious and I was able to emotionally connect with the main characters.

Eloise’s love story is my favorite so far!

Favorite of the series

Without giving anything away, the story is quite possibly my favorite of the series. Primarily because both the leads are just so imperfect and know they are imperfect. It made the story so perfect. There are heavy and dark themes throughout the book, but for me never took away from the joy I had reading it. Would definitely recommend.

romantic to say the least

I'm not going to lie there's times in the middle of the book where it gets wordy and the adjectives become a lot to fill in the blank I feel overall the story was a typical bridgerton series story happy ending and all good to get the backstory since the whole Netflix thing came out you can really see how far they went into what books to pull information to make it a series

To read or to listen?

Julia Quinn has been my go to author before Brigerton hit flixs. Out of all the books To Sir Phillip has always been a favorite read of the series. Audio does it justice, but I think I need to read book and listen at same time! Nah I just love Julia Quinn books. Next is Just like Heaven to listen to. over all excellent

The most interesting Bridgerton story so far

Eloise is my favorite Bridgerton. Her story deals with slightly more complex issues than the previous stories. This is a Romance novel, so it does still include the odd descriptions of sex that is typical of the genre. Sir Philip is an interesting choice for Eloise and his back story is complicated. You should read the books in order, but I do like this one the best.

Hilarious

Very funny. I laughed more with this book than I did with the previous ones. I especially liked the the interaction between the siblings. It was just so realistic with older brothers and younger sisters.

Loved it. I always wondered what type of man Eloise would marry to match her inquisitive nature.
