About this listen

Young Danny Mitchell's life seems to be falling apart. First his father died, then his mother moved them away from his life in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to the small river town of Martins Ferry, Ohio. Yet when he finds his father's boyhood journal, things start looking up as he and some neighborhood kids begin exploring the haunts of his late father.

But Danny's life is about to get an even bigger shock. Barbas, one of The 88, has destructive plans for North America that will start in the Ohio Valley region, from Pittsburgh to Martins Ferry. Jealous of the other members of The 88 and hoping to unleash something worse than the rest, Barbas has brought Dr. Ramachandran into his confidence, an Indian scientist who conducted experiments on captured Pakistanis a decade ago and is now a hunted man. Together with Captain Merritt of The Black Hand, Barbas and Ramachandran release a mist that genetically alters humans at a physical level, changing them into strange human-insect hybrids that have the ability to spread this alteration to others.

As hordes of the changed victims spread across the Ohio Valley region and beyond, Danny and his friends, along with a few other unchanged people they meet along the way, struggle to maintain their humanity in a world gone weird.

Strange Change

I've listened to several of Gosney's books and this one was my favorite. It's got a coming-of-age/Stand By Me storyline mixed with a post-apocalyptic disaster, all of which adds up to something special. I finished up the story yesterday and immediately thought "I hope he writes another one." Give this a chance, you won't regret it.

A wacky, zombie like, horror adventure

Transmutations is an entertaining, wacky, zombie like, horror adventure with quirky characters. Fans of movies like Shaun of the Dead, which is mentioned in this book, should get a kick out of this story. Be warned though, this is part of a series, so the story does not end at the end of the book. The narrator of the audio version does a very good job.

I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Zombies in Mid-America

Would you listen to Transmutations again? Why?

Yes. It's a great story even though it leaves off on a cliff-hanger that's a real bummer. (I HATE cliffhangers). Think Stranger Things meets The Walking Dead but with less blood and grownup nastiness.

What other book might you compare Transmutations to and why?

It's a light zombie story and although it doesn't bring to mind a particular book title, it does have a similar feel to the TV series Stranger Things with it's focus on a group of misfit kids and a villainous and obsessive military scientists.

What does Andy Harrington bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Harrington is a competent narrator whose reading style brings depth to the story and, like most audio books, you can listen when it isn't convenient to read.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The kid focus did provide a few smiles and chuckles. It's not a tear-jerker or a belly laugher, but it's certainly has it's scary and amusing moments.

Any additional comments?

Well worth a listen. I haven't checked to see if there's a sequel, but I'm going to be very disappointed if I never find out what happens.

Transmutations

Life as we know it is changing. Humans are being genetically altered into human-insect hybrids, but not everyone has been affected. There are pockets of unchanged humans, but can they survive?

I enjoyed this story written by Ed Gosney and narrated by Andy Harrington.

Surprisingly good

Would you listen to Transmutations again? Why?

Maybe in the future. I don’t listen to the same book twice unless I am confused about something. This book was clear and easy to understand. It contains an entertaining, good story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Riley because how smart he was.

What does Andy Harrington bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The interpretation of the characters. He brings them to life.

Any additional comments?

I received this book free for my honest opinion.

A great book.

Not your typical teen book. You will feel for the main characters and begin to understand what could happen in an essentially weird situation. Don't regret a moment.

Good Read

Transmutations was a good read by Ed Gosney. Danny Mitchell’s father died and his mother moved them away from the life he knew. While in his new home in Martins Ferry, Ohio, he finds his fathers journal from when he was a young boy. Along with the neighborhood kids, they begin exploring the haunts of his father. One of The 88, Barbas, has plans to destroy North America and it will start in the Ohio Valley region. Barbas is jealous of the other members of The 88 and wants to unleash something worse than the rest. They release a mist that genetically alters humans physically, it changes them into strange human-insect hybrids. They can spread the alteration to other humans. Danny, his friends and some other unchanged people struggle to maintain humanity. This was a good read and I cant wait to read more by the author.
