About this listen

Matt and Liz may have retired from the police, but that doesn't guarantee a quiet life.

A deserted building. A face in the window. A face that shouldn't be there.

Photography student Toby Unsworth has found the location for the perfect night-time shoot. A cobbled street in the old part of Fenfleet. Later, when he looks at the images on his laptop, he thinks he sees a woman's face in the window of an old, disused building. He asks his housemate Alex to come and take a look . . .

Two days later, Toby and Alex are dead. Carbon monoxide poisoning. An unfortunate accident. But Alex's mother doesn't believe it. She hires Matt and Liz to find out the truth.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Simon is missing. He was staying with his Aunt Jessie in a cottage on the edge of the marsh. And his older sister Kellie is increasingly worried.

Matt and Liz's investigations reveal that something very big and very dangerous has descended on the small market town of Fenfleet. And if they don't get to the bottom of it, more deaths will follow.

A little hard to follow in the beginning. You have to pay attention. It all made a lot more sense by the end. Enjoyed the way the stories came together.

Good story line.

Joy Ellis is a literary jewel. I've read everything I can find and have never been disappointed. The detail, personalities and missions are amazing. lm off to find something new or start to reread what is on my Audible.

outstanding

There are enough twists and turns in this story to satisfy any mystery buff. A person doesn’t have to start at the beginning of this series…. But I think it is much more interesting to do so!

Never disappoints!

I've always enjoyed Joy Ellis stories because they rely on intelligent language and good detective story telling, but this one had way too many F bombs and unnecessary sexual language which didn't have anything to do with the story at all.

Decent but too many F bombs

Thought it was me. Or thought I had mistaken this author for another. Just didn’t quite have the appeal and ease of listening I usually get. I did finally connect with the story and characters and glad I listened.

Not as wonderful

Joy Ellis is one of my favorite writers. I've read all the books about Jackman & Evans and Nikki and Joseph.

This book was really hard to get into. I was listening to the book and had to go back because I didn't know what had happened.

I listen to audio books all the time. This story wasn't engaging enough for me to stay focused and I started thinking about other things and then I was lost.

This book is free on Audible. I borrowed the Kindle book as well, it's free if you have Kindle unlimited. Having the Kindle book really helped when I had to find out who someone was.

Not as good as earlier books
