A keeper

I enjoy this book and plan to keep it on my ipod to listen to for motivation and as a refresher once in a while when I drift off track on my eating and exercise. A great listen!

Now this makes sense

I liked this book but I wish there were more resources for how to employ the advice given in the book. The author often says "consult your doctor" but truth is, I think my doctor is not quite cutting edge to know about this stuff yet.

Excellent resource

I have had a problem with fatigue and weight gain since I had my thyroid removed. This addressed both. I enjoyed the entire book and the insight I was able to gain from the quizes. I noticed other reviewers had frustration with accessing the supporting documentation. I found it available at the bottom of the listing and quite easy to download from audible.com.

Almost on target

What did you love best about UltraMetabolism?

Dr. Hyman gives a great explanation for conventional medicine's faulty approach to chronic disease treatment. Treating the body as a bunch of parts by different specialists that rely on drugs to treat symptoms misses the point of treating the whole person. Drugs more often than not mask symptoms but do nothing to help the body heal.He explains that lifestyle changes are the only reasonable treatments (preventions) for many of the chronic diseases that are so prevalent today. He goes into great detail explaining how many of these inflammation diseases have related symptoms that express themselves differently in each individual.

What other book might you compare UltraMetabolism to and why?

Clean- the Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself by Alejandro Junger. Both authors believe that reducing inflammation, eliminating toxins, allergens and stress can bring about healing in the body.

What does Mark Hyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought it was interesting but he kept repeating himself over and over, I don't know if it was poor editing or poor writing. Either way it was a liitle annoying to hear the same studies repeated several times in each section.

Any additional comments?

Like the author of Clean, Dr. Hyman sells products, supplements and shakes on his website. Both authors go on and on about eliminating processed foods, allergens and toxins then proceed to either recommend some of the same or sell them online. Both sell processed shakes to make their program easy ( after they tell you to eat whole foods). Both have serious allergens on their recommend lists (soy, nuts). Both recommend individual vitamins and mineral supplements even though you may not need them or worse, you could be harmed by them. After telling you that Dr's aren't trained in nutrition (neither were these two- they both still cling to outdated views of nutrition if you examine their dietary recommendations. It's too bad they haven't really done their homework because being almost right is still wrong.

Pleasantly surprised

I have always loved butter, salt, Susie Q's and other foods I knew were not good for me. I knew I had to make a change and gradually did, becoming a semi-vegetarian.

After reading this book, following the diet, giving up sugar and all unhealthy oils and basically eating non-processed foods I saw an immediate change in my face and its firmness. Next, I saw a change in how I felt overall. I lost weight (5 lbs) in the first 2 weeks, without any exercise and without trying to. I still haven't really applied the entire book to my regimen yet and can't wait to.

I feel like my body is 10 years younger with this new way of eating. I really recommend this book to everyone, young and old!

A health must for All!

Dr. Hyman's audio-book could make a big change is your personal health in a positive way.
Learn about body chemistry how it can be aided by eating the right foods. Fat or slim; if you are concerned about great health this item is great.

This book is very helpful. Dr. Hyman does a good job of showing why we might be working against ourselves in regard to staying healthy and trim, and how to remedy it. The information on CD 4 is available on the product summary page for this book on audible.com. Just click the product summary tab above, and look at the very bottom for the "extras" link. There is similar information available at ultrametabolism.com/guide, though the extras link is probably better.

UltraMetabolism

Over-the-top excellent information on how best to nourish and sustain our bodies and keep them healthy. Dr. Hyman's narrative is full of energy and promise. This is what's happening now: the knowledge of the how and why of failure of understanding of our food information and diet in contemporary America.
Makes sense.
Makes you want to think carefully about what you eat and what you don't eat!
