Publisher's summary

Everything you believe about how to lose weight is wrong. Weight gain and obesity are driven by hormones - in everyone - and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss.

In this highly listenable and provocative book, Dr. Jason Fung sets out an original, robust theory of obesity that provides startling insights into proper nutrition. In addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

Very informative-will make you question everything

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, because it is so informative and busts many myths even I believed (and I am a nutrition student!) All of the information really makes sense and rings true. He could have been quite a bit more succinct, he really spent a lot of time repeating his points. But still his passion for the science rang through.

Have you listened to any of Brian Nishii’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

A little over dramatic, but he kept you engaged. I have not heard other performances.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Better late than never!

All much different advice and ironically it all resonates with me. Thanks! I have renewed hope for finally reducing my weight after a 33 year journey of big losses and devastating gains. Very complete and well narrated.

Informative

I was in search of a book explaining the science behind fasting and autophagy. Although this book explains in detail how the body works and a broad history of dieting, it was really only the last hour that got into the details of fasting- and was pretty basic.
In short, Dr Fung explains that insulin spikes in your body over time create insulin resistance, creating a high body set points, making any weight loss diets fail after about 6 months. One main point was that calorie in/calorie out diets are only temporarily successful because the body is amazing at maintaining its set points and responds to less calories by slowing metabolism over time.
He recommends eating a Whole Foods diet- eliminating processed food/chemicals and consumption of especially high insulin stimulating foods, ie- anything with added sugars. And balancing the body’s hormone secretions/set points with intermittent fasting.

I personally did not enjoy the narrator, as his voice felt arrogant and biased, which to me took away the validity of the science. I wanted to hear the facts without attitude. But that could very well just be my own personal bias.

I would recommend this book, as there is good information. But it did feel dragged out, and wasn’t the most pleasant read.

Game changing.

This book makes so much sense. The misinformation around nutrition is scary. It's simple...we eat too much of the wrong foods. I was never able to eat six times a day.

A Different Perspective

I learned a lot about diet. It’s really long and filled with stats but so interesting.

Superbly written and mind blowing!

Narrator was awesome and kept my attention..which is difficult to do :)

The information and science in this book was so helpful, well written and thorough. It all finally makes sense!

As a type 2 diabetic, I have never fully understood insulin resistance and why none of the diets were working for me. I understand completely now and exactly what I can do and why and how I will reverse this process in my body.

Outstanding audible book!

Good information

There is lots of good information in this audiobook. Unfortunately it was smothered by dumbed down repetitive emphasis on common sense concepts.
if more time was spent discussing topics such as the science around insulin sensitivity when intermittent fasting when eating a healthy foods rather than constant emphasis on those who are not eating healthy while Intermittent fasting... ad nauseam. Or more emphasis on the fascinating concepts of brains use of ketones and how that's different from glucose Etc.

Great information, terrible narration

I very much enjoyed the information within this book. It’s a great introduction to the science and practice of intermittent fasting. But the narrator is really awful. So over dramatic- even silly sounding. It was very distracting.
