About this listen

Finnegan May has had an eventful time in Manhattan since she first moved to New York City. Her unique profession and quirky, bubbly personality endear her to everyone who meets her.

Finnegan can't seem to help herself from getting embroiled in trouble. It just seems to follow her around. On a simple visit to a bakery to get her jerk cop a danish, she lands herself in the middle of dognapping and death.

It is up to Detective Jane McLeary to find Finnegan as she flees through a blizzard in the middle of New York City with a huge Great Dane before her relentless pursuer catches her.

A series that grows on you

Thoroughly enjoyed this installment of Unleashed. The light humor, the allusion to sex without the details, the characters I'd love to call friends all make for an enjoyable listen...and that's not mentioning the excellent narration. It took me awhile to get used to being included in the story (the protagonist engages the listener/reader now and then, usually when she is feeling a tad embarrassed,) but after awhile it just added to the flavor of the book. It's a writing style that I'm not used to, but it is fitting for this series and makes you feel like one of the gang of friends and relatives.

Finnegan is her delightful self with her predisposition to be at the wrong place at the right time. It's Christmas and she walks into her love's favorite bakery to buy her a treat and finds the owner dead on the floor. Of course there is a dog involved, and a chase, and resolution. All amid life unfolding for all the characters. Finnegan has a way of making everything better, sweeter, and funnier. Light fun with a lot of heart and chuckles.

Get's Better With Each Listen

I wasn't particularly impressed the first time I listened to this book. The long chase through a New York City snowstorm eventually became too long and came off as farcical as the extended car chase at the end of 'Sex and the Single Girl;' (I watched it a few times with my Grans). That being said after listening a couple more times I came to further appreciate this story. The chase, though extended for too long was indeed fairly humorous and as always the dogs were great. "The broken leash" is obviously going to be a part of every story, hopefully there will be one soon in which Finn is not the central player. I also believe that having Izzy join Finn's business would be an excellent addition to the series and I can see a wider variety of plot possibilities. One thing that needs badly to change is the voice of Finn's friend Carrie, Finn uses the word "squeaky toy" that voice is a bad squeaky toy. Despite that I enjoy the series and I'm already looking forward to the next installment of "Unleashed."

Narrator Claire Buchignani reading is perfect!

What an absolute joy to reenter the Finnegan Temperance May's world yet again! Finnegan, dogwalker extraordinaire, is on another adventure in Manhattan involving dogs including her Border Collie Sir Calvin Cornelius Fluffytoes! Of course, family and friends are along for the ride as Finn helps solve another mystery that involves man's best friend. This time mystery surrounds the death of an upscale baker and the dognapped of a champion Great Dane named Tinkerbell, which leads to many Scooby-Doo references this reader found absolutely adorable.
It's the Christmas holiday in Manhattan and during a visit to her mother's, our heroine Finn discovers that her mother will be selling the family home, which is the principal source of her now-dead father. She does get good news as her mom plans to join her in Manhattan after being hired for an adventurous job. She becomes engaged to Detective Jane McLeary and upon learning of her addiction to a particular type of danish, visits the posh bakery only to find the owner dead and the owner's champion Great Dane abducted. Detective Jane is charged with apprehending the perpetrator but Finn's principal concern is the dog of course.
Following her own set of rules with her own batch of clues, Finnegan discovers the first place winning Great Dane confined in a van owned by the man whose dog took second place. She and Calvin release the dog and make a run for it while the man gives chase during a blizzard on Christmas day. But the dog walkers of Manhattan and Detective McLeary help ensure Finn's safety and later the Great Dane is returned to the murdered woman's daughter. In the end, Finnegan purchases the family home to be used as a rental property adding yet another piece of New York property to her already impressive financial portfolio.
Words cannot express my sheer delight with this series! Writer Erik Schubach grows the Manhattan world of Finnegan Temperance May beautifully! He shows us a sweet, humble, kind, and generous heroine who manages to be outrageously successful financially as well as socially. Her world continues to fill with friends that become family who contribute greatly to her socioemotional well-being. For each of the following books of the series, readers are treated to wonderful character development both within the narrative and throughout the series arc. In addition, the audience can count on incredible world-building, impeccable pacing (the rate at which the writer introduces key elements in the story), and perfect balance (the distribution of varying types of elements in the narrative) that provides an exceptionally enjoyable reading experience.
