pretty good

Since I hadn't read the earlier books it took me a few to put together the overarching plotlines, but after that it became an enjoyable story with some good witty dialogue and fun scenes.

the characters were interesting and had many colorful traits. I enjoyed this book quite well. I'll want to go back a read the rest of the series when I get a chance.

Better equal with friends than overlord alone

Thordric must go in search of ancient unknown magics to free Vey from the late High Wizard Kalljard’s magic trap. In so doing, he restores magic to women and his friend, Kalljard’s son, learns a valuable lesson about wanting too much power over others.

I have enjoyed Thordric’s adventures, his magical world, and the underlying themes of justice and equality. This is a great series for young readers.

More of the Same

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unseasoned Adventurer is written by Kathryn Wells and narrated by Morgan Keller. This is the third book in the Half-Wizard Thordric series. It's a short adventure that builds very little on the characters and relationships that are found in the first two books. It has an interesting plot that's a bit convoluted, and it's weighed down by erratic pacing. Despite all this, there are some entertaining moments to be had here.

Unseasoned Adventurer follows Thordric on a quest to rescue his friends and defeat a dark evil. Although the book primarily focuses on Thordric, High Wizard Vey and Hamlet make a reappearance. Unfortunately, some of the best characters from the first two books, like Lizzy and the inspector, only make brief appearances here. Instead, Wells chooses to introduce a bevy of new characters. This consistent side-character shuffling makes this series primarily about Thordric. This would be understandable if he had a rich, intricate personality. However, his character maintains the same bumbling, excitable personality that he's had throughout the Half-Wizard series. He seems one-dimensional throughout this work, even while his magic abilities go through extreme transitions. These changes had the potential to raise intricate moral and ethical choices for his character, but they end up having little effect upon his demeanor.

The plot is primarily a fetch-quest which takes Theodoric to various locations. This is the third time that Thordric is tasked with saving his friends, and the premise has become somewhat stale. There are a few refreshing, unpredictable twists, but the overall premise remains the same. The story's pacing is also somewhat erratic. This work has moments of excitement and action, but they're oftentimes followed by sequences of drawn-out dialog or lengthy exposition. It's unfortunate that these moments needed to be added to such a short, five hour and 23 minute audiobook.

Fortunately, the slower moments are passable thanks to Morgan Keller's fine narration. He speaks clearly and enunciates properly, and his voice never grows tiresome. The characters all have unique tones, so they each sound unique. This makes them interesting and easy to differentiate. As mentioned in past reviews, Keller doesn't have the strongest flow. This causes some of the sentences to sound broken up and erratic. Despite this, he provides entertaining and engaging narration throughout this work.

Unseasoned Adventurer is somewhat average. The characters don't stand-out in any particularly unique or interesting ways, and the plot follows much of the same patterns found in the first two books. If you enjoyed those first two books, you'll likely find something to appreciate in the Unseasoned Adventurer. But if you didn't enjoy those works, you like won't find much of interest here.

Great Fantasy Adventure

The groundwork narrative seems to be difficult to follow at first, but is realized to be necessary after the first chapter. Then it escalated into an involving storyline.
The narration is done well with good vocal pressure, but the voice changes could use more variation in character relatability. The narrator was very clear and easy to follow.
I recommend this audiobook for ages 14 and older due to some tense situations.
I was given this audiobook for free and I freely give it my rating and opinion

Better and better

This is quickly becoming one of my favored series. The writing is better and better making up for the sometimes dry narration, which to be fair is better than it was. The magical system is becoming better defined and more expansive. The character progression has really stepped up. I highly recommend this series.
