About this listen

It's 1876 and Dr. Viveca Lancaster is frustrated by the limits placed upon female physicians of color. When she is offered the chance to set up a practice in the small all-black community of Grayson Grove, Michigan, she leaves her California home and heads east. The very determined Viveca knows all about fighting for her rights. But she may need more than determination to face down the distractingly handsome Nate Grayson, the Grove's bull-headed mayor.

Nate Grayson goes to the train station expecting Dr. V. Lancaster to be a man. But when the lovely, dark-skinned Viveca introduces herself, he is at first speechless, then orders her back on the train and out of his town! It's 1876 and women aren't supposed to be doctors, men are. However, Nate isn't prepared for this extraordinary beauty's stubbornness and fire, nor for the vivid way she heals - then steals - his heart. Contains mature themes.

Love the little hints of history throughout the story. It’s not as hot passionate love making as I’m used to reading but it was nice.

A nice story

I absolutely loved this book, OMG it was so good. I can't even tell you how much I loved this book, from the very first page I was hooked. I just loved all the characters and the dialogues between them, Beverly Jenkins is one of my favorite authors & I have read many of her books, but I have to say this may be my favorite. 😃😃😃😍😍😍

It’s was a wonderful journey back in time to hear about the feisty doctor and surly divorcee. An enchanting tale that teaches history and enthralls a tale of mystery and love.

I have listened to this book multiple times and it just keeps getting better! I honestly can’t count how many times this listen makes. I love Beverly Jenkins! I love her writing style, I love the amazing characters she creates. I love the history she includes in her writing! I feel like I find pieces of myself in her writing as I imagine my ancestors who lived during these times and the way they must’ve lived. This book is definitely worth the money to purchase it and then some! Fantastic Read!

She is def a favorite for me. I wish her series were sold as set on audible. But I love how her female characters are so strong but not at the expense of the black man. The male characters are strong and not intimidated by a strong woman. Must read. This is one of my favorites so far.

Everything Beverly Jenkins writes is GOLD

I have come to love Beverly Jenkins stories including this one; however, the narrator was very off-putting... her voice didn't really match the characters in the story.

needs a different narrator

I've read the book 3 times and loved it each time. Had I heard the audio version There's a chance I would never read anything by Ms. Jenkins (and she is an AWESOME woman and author). The person who did the audio on this sounded emotionless. I still think she was a robot.

Great book / Horrible Audio

I enjoyed the story. It would have been much better if there was an male narrator for the men.
The narrator was not good on changing her voice actually I don’t think she tried.
