A Sabbat Worlds novel.
We will make our own history, and all other accounts be damned.
Listen to it because...Volpone Glory covers the exploits of the soldiers of the 50th Volpone of the Royal Volpone Regiment. Their ranks are filled with proud and arrogant soldiers who come from the noble families of Volpone, earning them the name 'Bluebloods' among the Astra Militarum. Nick Kyme breathes life and humility into the members of this otherwise supercilious regiment as they battle against impossible odds.
The story: as war rages across the Sabbat Worlds, the Volpone Bluebloods are sent to Gnostes at the head of a massive Imperial host. Tasked with the liberation of the Agria island chain from the entrenched Blood Pact, the haughty soldiers of the Volpone find their mettle sorely tested in a brutal meat grinder. After a punishing setback threatens to derail the campaign, an unlikely champion rises through the ranks and victory once again seems possible. But the propaganda of war is a fickle beast, and the Archenemy are cultivating a plot the Imperium can scarcely fathom. Through glory and honour, the Volpone are desperate to prevail, but can they endure the rigours of the bloodiest campaign in their vaunted history and come out the other side intact?
Written by Nick Kyme, narrated by Andrew Wincott.

As for the book itself it was interesting to see events from the Volpones POV. Maybe we will have thouse Sabbat Crusade anthology books in audioform.
Great book, but there is a one glaring question

I think this is personal taste, but I like the voice actors voice - much gravitas very talent - yet it was a bit slow? I put the book on 1.35X speed and made sure my bass boost headphones setting was off because he already has plenty, and it was perfect.
well done Nick and Andrew!
Character arcs, intersecting: a cut above the norm

Most of the books I've read where the guard are involved I feel for at least a few main characters and can sympathize or feel something for them even if they aren't a good character. However in this story I only ended up liking maybe two characters and both were barely ever in the story. It's hard to root for or feel any sort of liking to a character when they don't show a single bit of personality other than treating everyone around them as trash. The only character who broke outta that for me was ones who liked to kill people for no apparent reason and nobody really seemed to care and another who finally toward the end got suspicious.
Overall some of the story is hard to understand such as a spaceships cannon being used on the planet but it's described as a laser or something and artillery in another scene. The characters are all just forgettable as besides a few I barely remembered who was who and what their roles were. The ending felt rushed as like yay we won a battle and now the planets safe even though the enemy fell back and could be regrouping.
Sorry I know it's not much of a review but I had a good few issues. There were some decent moments along the way but they were so few and far that I can't even remember em now after having just finished the book.

First, regarding the narration: I thought it was very well done! Wincott, IMO, was a great choice to portray the Volpone, though I can understand his tone is not to everyone's taste. He seems to capture the ingrained half-sneer with which they regard the rest of the universe, even when they don't realize it.
Second, I seriously have no idea where some listeners got "SJW" from. Even for a 40k novel, there's nothing particularly progressive—let alone radical—about it. My only guesses are as follows: (1) the words "misogynist" and "privilege" are used, but referring to... a man who basically says women belong at home and *literal hereditary nobility,* respectively; (2) some characters think maybe serfs should actually have basic rights? maybe; and (3) a gay couple is implied to exist.
Honestly, this was just a fun, standalone 40k story that lets you see more of some Guard regiments we don't often get to read about. Oh, and there are rough-riders on motorcycles. 'Nuff said.
A fun listen!
