About this listen

What do you do when your knight in shining armor lives, literally, in a different world? Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives among the romantic hills with their archaeologist parents.

Stuck among the rubble of medieval castles in rural Tuscany on yet another hot, dusty archaeological site, Gabi and Lia are bored out of their minds... until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in 14th-century Italy. And worse yet, in the middle of a fierce battle between knights of two opposing forces. Suddenly Gabi’s summer in Italy is much, much more interesting.

disappointed

The 21st century valley girl meeting 15th century Italian Renaissance just didn't mesh well in my opinion.

A Great Escape!

Any additional comments?

Ok, so I only make comments when a particular book/series is just awesome. I love the way Lisa Bergren enthralled me into this historical fiction, incredible love story, totally funny series! Yes, it is cheesy at times but what 14th century knights are not a little cheesy when it comes to love...especially in Italy! If you love a love story, great action and a little funny, this book is for you! I am so happy that I picked this treasure up! I realized, with all the distopian novels I have been reading that sometimes are a really sad, OK, a lot sad, this book was just refreshing! I guess I can say that when I read a good book/series that I cannot put down and laugh along the way and feel happy love....it is a winner! Some other reviews say that Pam Turlow (the narrator) was not that great...l beg to differ. She puts in some great talent here. Her Italian is wonderful and brings the story to life! Her voice is a little deeper than most 17 year old, high pitched, annoying voices, so it was fine with me. All I can say is....THIS WAS AWESOME!

Beware, worst female narrator ever

I used to “sample” listen to books before purchasing when I started Audible Books over a year ago, but have had great luck with narrators. I have been listening a lot of Audible books past months to take my mind off upcoming brain surgery. Returned home from hospital this week and an older daughter was singing the praises of this series she was reading, so I ordered the first two books from Audible. It was so painful to listen to that I could not bear it; and it wasn’t the pain of brain surgery! How did this narrator survive the selection process? I actually want my money back, but shame on me for selecting without sampling.

A little over dramatic at first... But enjoyable

I've got the kindle version of this book, and I enjoy the series (first three books anyway). I struggled initially with the performance- the accents overdone and generally over dramatic, but it didn't take long for me to get used to it. By about a quarter of the way through I didn't even notice it and was simply enjoying the story.

The story is young adult fiction and well done. A lot of research has gone into it. The story is original and interesting with characters that end up feeling like friends.

Totally Enjoyable

Fun story about early Italy and time travel. Great characters and interesting ideas based on facts known today and how people might have lived in this time. It is fiction but totally believable. Can’t wait to listen to the rest of the books.

Loved this!!

It started out a little slow, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get into it. But I was wonderfully surprised by the sudden turn. This turned out to be an amazing book, and I can't wait to start the next one!!

The reader is not right for this series

While Pam Turlow is a good reader, she was not right for this series. Speaking in the heroin voice, she gives a performance that is older than the character. Every time she offers a nervous laugh, I cringe. She is just not speaking in this characters voice, comes across as prim and proper, and OLDER. There are books I've listened to where her talent would be just what the doctor ordered but it spoiled this book for me such that I'm not going to finish the series. Good luck to those who commence this book.

fun chick flick

What about Pam Turlow’s performance did you like?

She definitely catches the, like, teenybopper expressions very well! Fun!

Any additional comments?

Read to see if my 12-year-old would like. I honestly think this book has some very good qualities and it is funny and light but at times deals with serious historical themes.

I could wish the author had avoided terms like "hottie", because most of the adventure doesn't run along those lines. There are some very well done interactions with the medieval world (things like the way the dresses fit, the way women never rode horses in formal company, medical myths, etc.).

Anyway, the character development is pretty good and it will probably be a lot of fun for Mercy when she's about 14 and can process some of the overdone romance.

Such a different kind of story line. Love it!

I love this series. I like that it takes you back in time and you realize the things we take for granted!
