2023 School Library Journal Best Books of the Year, Long-listed

The Mummy meets Death on the Nile in What the River Knows, Isabel Ibañez's lush, immersive historical fantasy set in Egypt and filled with adventure, a rivals-to-lovers romance, and a dangerous race.

Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that’s been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns the most: her globetrotting parents—who frequently leave her behind.

When she receives word of their tragic deaths, Inez inherits their massive fortune and a mysterious guardian, an archeologist in partnership with his Egyptian brother-in-law. Yearning for answers, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and a golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died. But upon her arrival, the old world magic tethered to the ring pulls her down a path where she soon discovers there’s more to her parents' disappearance than what her guardian led her to believe.

With her guardian’s infuriatingly handsome assistant thwarting her at every turn, Inez must rely on ancient magic to uncover the truth about her parents' disappearance—or risk becoming a pawn in a larger game that will kill her.

What the River Knows is the first audiobook in the thrilling Secrets of the Nile duology.

"Phenomenal. This is a book that truly deserves that word. What the River Knows has it all—page-turning mystery, adventure, intrigue and betrayal, laugh-out-loud banter, and slow-burn romance with characters that jump off the page. Fun YA book!

Great book for the YA audience. Performance is energetic and helps bring the characters to life. Story is fun and engaging with few dull moments. Seems like the author has done a lot of research into Egypt and it makes me want to travel there.

Pretty good.

I love Ancient Egypt and any book that can combine it with fantasy and magic. I have been waiting to read this until the second book comes out. And I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I started the second book and finished it before rating either. This book was good. The second was not.

What an adventure!

Loved the journey, the discoveries, gasped, hated and stomped my foot at the end. Good thing the sequel is available!

*SCREAMING* I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT MEOW. THAT ENDING!!!!!!!!!

Once again. Isabel has crafted a swooningly romantic story full of fierce female leads who love their food and pretty dresses. and making boys blush. This story is full of action and magic and weaves historical fact with fantastical fiction.

Inez has run away to Egypt from her life of opulence and luxury back in Buenos Aries, to find out what happened her parents, who have always run off to Egypt half of the year on these daring archeological adventures, leaving Inez behind. Upon arriving in Alexandria, she encounters the mysterious, yet handsome, handler that her uncle has tasked with getting Inez back on the next ship home to Argentina. In classic Isabel Ibanez style, our heroine runs off and thus starts the rivals-to-lovers plot set against the archeological sites of ancient Egypt, daring adventures along the Nile River, and high stakes life-or-death moments. I also love how Ibanez has thoughtfully laid out a plot around colonization of ancient cultures and theft of their artifacts.

Basically, if you loved The Mummy or Death on the Nile, pick this one up! I cannot wait for the second book and need it ASAP.

Captivating!

This book was inspired by The Mummy! To this day, that is one of my favorite movies. I got my daughter name from that movie. So naturally, I had to read this book, and it did not disappoint.

The twists and turn this book takes you on. Who is dead? Who isn't? Who is keeping secret, and what kind of secret? The questions. So much unanswered still!

The descriptions that Isabel ibañez explains in this book are amazing! It was almost as if I was there in Egypt with the characters. Man, I wish I was!

The characters are great. Whit is my favorite, and I hope nothing happens to him ever! Protect this man, please!

The end of this book was absolutely wild! So much happens that makes me so sad and angry. But I'm trying to hold out for the next book! Goodness, I hope it is not too long!
