Publisher's summary

Gillie Trewlove knows what a stranger’s kindness can mean, having been abandoned on a doorstep as a baby and raised by the woman who found her there. So, when suddenly faced with a soul in need at her door - or the alleyway by her tavern - Gillie doesn’t hesitate. But he’s no infant. He’s a grievously injured, distractingly handsome gentleman who doesn’t belong in Whitechapel, much less recuperating in Gillie’s bed....

Being left at the altar is humiliating; being rescued from thugs by a woman - albeit a brave and beautiful one - is the pièce de résistance to the duke of Thornley’s extraordinarily bad day. After nursing him back from the brink, Gillie agrees to help him comb London’s darker corners for his wayward bride. But every moment together is edged with desire and has Thorne rethinking his choice of wife. Yet Gillie knows the aristocracy would never accept a duchess born in sin. Thorne, however, is determined to prove to her that no obstacle is insurmountable when a duke loves a woman.

Likable characters with a relevant message

Gilly, the female “hero”, was an independent owner of a tavern. As a business woman who ran the show she demonstrated decisiveness, resistance, compassion, integrity, and intelligence a welcome change from inane female lead characters. Thorne, the male hero, after being left at the alter, was in White Castle searching for his fiancé and when he was brutally attacked. Gilly rescues Thorne, a “nob,” and nurses him back to health. Thorne is intrigued by the reserved and lovely Gilly and she by him. They communicate well together and enjoy each other’s company.
This book is a bit too long so I will cut to the chase. Thorne begins to see the world differently through Gilly’s eyes, her commitment to assisting others regardless of their preconceived worth by society and her innate kindness and generosity. Throne’s growth does not occur only by observing but by Gilly fearlessly speaking her mind. Her beliefs provide a relevant message then and now - that all people are diverse, have value, and deserve respect and kindness.
Thorne would like to pursue a romantic relationship with Gilly but is stymied by his conflict between duty and desire. Gilly accepts that their relationship will end eventually.
Gilly’s family is composed of orphans taken in and raised by a kind and loving woman. The storyline demonstrates that every member of a family is important to the success of the individuals in the family,as well as the family as a whole.
The plot and storyline are interesting albeit too long and I have left much for the reader/listener to discover. I recommend this book to readers/listeners who enjoy lengthy stories with likable unique characters, action that is unpredictable but relevant to storyline, secondary characters that surprise you, and primary plot twists tied up - no important loose ends left hanging. That is not to say that more resolution in regard to the runaway fiancé wouldn’t have been welcome but that is just a thought.
I do not recommend this book to those who prefer a tight quick paced storyline with much amorous activity as they would be disappointed with “When a Duke Loves A Woman.”
I enjoyed the narrator’s rendition.

You don’t want to miss this one!

One of my all time top 5 favorites! Problem is Lorraine Heath and Kate Reading now have about 10 books in my top 5! Strong wonderful characters, hot sex, riveting story! Part of a great series that includes the other family members from the other books, but each book can stand alone as appropriate history & characters are explained fully.

Engaging Story and Series

I enjoyed this series and the rags to riches theme. Lorraine Heath has created characters in such a way that the reader becomes quickly invested. Gillie, the main female character was determined, resiliant, kind-hearted, and very likeable. It is a nice change from the insipid female lead characters. The storyline maintains the reader's interest throughout the book and offers a relevant message.

Didn’t want it to end

Second book into a series that’s quickly become a new favorite. The writing style is perfection. You can practically feel the electricity between the couples with steamy scenes so hawt hawt hawt and beautifully done. The relationship build has become my favorite part of her books. Looking forward to the next in my queue.

A FAVORITE love story of most I've heard!

This is simply beautiful! If you (warning-possible ending give-away...unless, like I who listen to MANY of this genre, you know they ALWAYS have happy endings which is 1 reason we keep listening to them, as they're so much unlike REAL life) like love winning despite all odds against it, this is for you. Altho' I knew my "happy ever after" was coming, I still found myself shedding tears @ a couple incredibly endearingly precious points in this romance! Wonderful characters! So colorful, witty, charming, dashing, brave, daring, poor, rich, sad, a dear lonely little boy that will touch your heart, & always the fight to keep the lowest of the classes of people born into that life thru no fault of their own, within their HARD lives, & a woman daring to rise above it, & the richest who always look down their oh so snobby noses at the less fortunate, yet those who have the most wealth may be the most miserable & the so-called "poor" can be so "rich" in love & family & TRUE friends. This beautifully shows when the 2 are mixed, what they learn from each other & how we ALL are just humans who should embrace each other! Dare I say most middle & lower "class" know that...it is the top richest in the world who need this valuable lesson! Life can change so fast & the rich can lose everything, & oh, what a lesson that would be for them! I pray to see the day where all treat each other as equals, but know I won't. Humans will always be humans. Like living paycheck to paycheck with a huge vehicle payment all for show...
when it is JUST transportation from 1 place to another & sits mostly unused! What a stupid waste! If you bought used, & had that extra $ every month, wouldn't that be nicer? I believe THAT is so much more vital than JUST working to pay off debts EVERY month. Most don't NEED the fancy cars they drive! It is just to get from point A to point B & you pay WHAT for that? Dumb! It's a pet peeve of mine. You look "rich" when you don't have a pot to pee in & don't own a home & rent! W/o a car pymnt you could pay off a mortgage twice as fast & be truly debt free & the money you make you could keep then! Save it & buy what you want THEN! OWN all you have! The person who makes payments on all they have is literally a slave to the lendors! TRULY wealthy people drive used &/or paid in cash for used or new very nice cars (the VERY RICH write checks for cars costing $60,000-$1,000,000++ & don't NEED loans) & thus have funds for emergencies, old age, & especially to help TRULY needy people who need help more than you need your fancy car & it's big payment. Guess which 1 feels better, more right, & as if you've actually made the world a better place when you die? Whatever you choose says all anyone needs to know about your character. You have to live with yourself. The rich man in this book knows money & things don't buy happiness. The poor lady knows what is truly important. And HIS life is changed forever by her kindness & giving! A lesson many today need to learn.

A sweet story

I enjoyed this story. It was very wholesome and with a lot of heart. It was sweet and slow paced but the characters and story telling made it enjoyable and I'm happy for having listened to it.
The narrator was excellent for this story.

Good story

Kate Reading is terrific. Story was interesting and sweet. Lots of sexual tension but things didn't get heated up until about chapter 18. Great ending. I do highly recommend.
