About this listen

Wizard scouts are the deep recon forces of the Intergalactic Empire. When a team of the advanced soldiers are transported to a land where magic reigns without their technology, they must match their wits and skills against an enemy unlike any they've ever faced.

Tasked with freeing a land conquered by an army of vampires and demons, the wizard scouts must adapt to a new way of fighting, or they'll never make it back home.

Good story

Like the other books in this series it is a great story though I will admit this is not my favorite of the series. To me it was short less action and no character development compared to the other books though I can't wait for the next book

I preferred earlier books

I found this story to be confusing, and didn't like the in fighting between brothers. Also I didn't like the concept of one brother turning bad!

Conflicted but still hooked

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I still recommend the series but I'm starting to have doubts.

In this installment of the Intergalactic Wizard Scout Chronicles, there is a lot going on, this book answers a lot of questions from earlier in the series. From a story standpoint it all fits together perfectly but i feel that Character development was broke in this installment. (Reasons why ahead - Spoilers Warning below)

Myers - Myers takes his hatred for Richards overboard. It's so forced it's not even rational. You got Richards (his brother) stolen from her womb, raised as an hard luck orphan and Myers spends the whole book pissed off because he doesn't feel Richard has a right to call their parents his parents because he wasn't there their whole lives. Doh. Once and a while, he shows some respect for Richards, but at this point I don't understand how that's even possible. He literally finds every excuse in the book (pun intended) to hate him.

Myers has always been a hard case for the first 4 books, but always came out to be respectable and professional but rough around the edges, now he's hell bent on getting this DNA gas for his lover so they 'can live happily ever after'. Going so far as to use his colleagues as pawns and risk their lives to get this done. Ok, that's is a typical trap for characters to fall into but there was no build up to it. Suddenly, he's willing to 'go to the dark side' to please her. Even if he admits early in the book he knows he's being used.

Myers' fall to the dark side, wasn't expecting that. I don't mean i didn't see him capable of it, i thought he was either dead or going to be tortured until Richard shows up in another book and saves him. Would have been neat to have Richard save his brother and mend whatever kind of relationship they could salvage but no, he falls for the 'live happily ever after' dark lord enticement and doesn't even ask if they have cookies.

Richards' Friends - mostly the other Wizard Scouts that were pulled along on this adventure. These guys have been with Richard since the beginning. They sat there and watched as Myers hounded him, tortured him, and made his life as miserable as one can make it. All while being Richards' superior officer leaving Richards powerless to stop it. Myers sabotaged his DNA gas (basically immortality) procedure that left him somewhat tired and hungry until the day he dies. No remorse, Everyone knew what Myers did until this book. Richard is just as wrong as Myers for their issues and they both need to get over it. Not only that, but they all seem to know Myers intentions for getting the DNA gas isn't honorable (long story) but they don't hold that against him for whatever reason.

Richards has his doomsday power, that might backfire and kill everyone friend and foe alike. It's been used twice in the series now (i think, can't really remember). Both times he used it to turn the tide of battle and save the day while managing to not kill all his friends. Suddenly, they are giving him the stink eye. It's mild, not like they disown him or anything but if you compare the reactions they have towards Myers, it doesn't make much sense.

Richard and the elf - Ok so back in book 4 the new high priestess of the elves makes an appearance. She seems to be vital to the overall story line going forwards. If i interpreted things correctly she is a possible love interest for Richards. But by the end of Book 5. they-still-haven't-met. They've had a few interconnect moments where they magically interact or they end in the story with people both of them know but after 2 books and 30 hours of audible, they don't have a clue who each other is. Almost makes me think the author hasn't decided if they should hook up. It's past exciting and anticipation, it's turned into frustration.

The story is great, borderline epic. There is a lot of mythology in this series where you actually get to witness the history as it unfolds. Hartman puts it together nicely. Over 5 books, I am left satisfied and can't wait to hear more. but as i stated, concerned about character development, IMHO i see the character development unraveling. Forced and i fear could lead to me being turned off to the series.

Still Hooked.

Honestly, I cant get enough of this series. Each book gets me more and more involved with the cast. Rick and Nick are such an amazing pair and I love their interactions. I would keep reading this series for years to come if the author kept pumping them out.

Twists

The way this story twists and turns on itself is a work of art! I love the way the author's mind works. Everytime I think I have it figured out, something comes up and catches me off guard.
