About this listen

A fateful shipwreck leaves the young and wealthy Lord Brandon presumed dead, and his estate in England lies abandoned and ripe for the picking. Years later, his step-cousin Justine finds him alive and drug-addicted, and against his family's wishes, boldly brings him home to reclaim his inheritance.

Dark surprises disturb Brandon at every turn - a ruined property, a traitorous, bitter family, his fiancee married to his rival. And Justine, the shy, quiet girl he grew up with is no longer a little girl, but an alluring and determined young woman. Can he trust her or is she a part of the intricate web of lies and half-truths?

As they work together to salvage what's left of Wolfsgate and their place in society, age-old jealousies and shadowy secrets threaten at every turn, but irresistible passions run wild and prove even more powerful.

Justine is his wife, after all.

Justine and Brandon have been bound in a marriage forced upon them by their family for their own deceitful purposes. But the deep, loyal bond that grows between husband and wife isn't part of their enemies' plan. In fact, it could destroy their plan.

No one counted on Brandon and Justine falling in love. Not even Brandon and Justine.

Contains mature themes.

Gothic Miscommunication

The story overall is good, but the lack of communication occurs throughout the entire book. This would have made a great 4-6 hour novella. I do understand hiding the truth and misunderstandings are common themes in romance novels, but it’s way too drawn out in this book. Gave me anxiety, kept wanting to yell at the characters to just be straight forward. Also, it’s a little smut heavy, but that does help fill in gaps between all the lying and avoidance.

The performances were amazing and honestly why I was able to finish. Will Thorne is one of my favorite masculine voices for period romances and Justine Eyre is a gem.

Cat needs to write more regency!

Loved this series. Great story & plenty of steam… wish there was a third or fourth book!

Long and drawn out

The overall story was decent, but it it just took so long to muddle through. As far as the narration, I absolutely LOVE Justine Eyre. She always does a remarkable job. The male narrator's voice, though ok enough to listen to, was jarring since his reading was very concise, as though he was reading only one sentence at a time instead of telling a story.

This is somewhat Gothic romance, but mostly a drama with a lot of adult situations throughout.

Flat Out Straight Up Porn

Two damaged people heal each other through sex. Lots and lots and lots. A porn premise looking for a story base. Justine always does a good job narrating. Will was new to me but he did ok.

Enjoyed the story

I really liked the story. It was kind of embarrassing sitting at the doctors office, and then suddenly, a sex scene came up. Lol. You can only imagine my embarrassment in trying to pause my phone. I was all thumbs. Overall it was a great story.

The narration made this a struggle to finish.

The story was good but the performance added a heavy dose of cringe. The female narrator was excessively croaky, gaspy and leaned into the accent too hard to be believable. The male reader's cadence was unusual enough to be distracting, either oddly drawing out the last syllable of every sentence or rattling off as if reading a grocery list. That said, their voices are good enough to make me hope their respective performances improve with time and experience. I'd like to hear from them again- hold the cheese next time.

The spice

This was good! Great! Amazing! I picked this up because I listened to a book narrated by Will Thorne and his voice is absolutely incredible. It was very well written. The plot was nice and the flow was even better. I loved how she was determined to help him see how important he is and I love that he was able to love her the way she deserves. The spice in this was another pleasant surprise. The way he yearned for her was really attractive. He’s also very very vocal about what he wants, feels, is doing!!! It was quite intense. This was a perfect blend of love, spice, pearl grabbing (historical and regency romances usually do leave me scandalized 😂) and drama. I really enjoyed listening to this.

Heavy and fulfilling

Wow. This one was heavy but beautiful. The author did a wonderful job with layers of the story. Spoiler: there is addiction, some abuse that might make some people sensitive to issues uncomfortable. The romance development was lovely. It’s a very steamy, descriptive novel. Loved the ending. Justine Eyre has the most beautiful voice but the make reader was sooo monotone. Also the shifting between the two was a struggle as I had to adjust to the different voices for the same characters. Overall very enjoyable!
