About this listen
The reason we meditate, teaches Pema Chodron, is because something is bothering us. Yet the root of suffering and the root of happiness are one and the same: the mind. On Working Directly with the Mind, she offers pithy instructions on taming a wild mind, and becoming fully present with all of our experiences.

With war and violence flaring all over the world, many of us are left feeling vulnerable and utterly helpless. In this book Pema Chödrön draws on Buddhist teachings to explore the origins of aggression, hatred, and war, explaining that they lie nowhere but within our own hearts and minds. She goes on to explain that the way in which we as individuals respond to challenges in our everyday lives can either perpetuate a culture of violence or create a new culture of compassion.

Story
On Getting Unstuck, Pema Chodron introduces a rare Tibetan teaching she received from her teacher, Dzigar Kontrul Rinpoche, and one that has become critical to her practice. Here, she unveils the mystery of an ineffable quality; a "pre-emotional" feeling that arises in us, brings us discomfort, and causes us to react by escaping the discomfort, often with harmful habits. With Getting Unstuck, she offers us a first look at "both the itch and the scratch": what Tibetan Buddhists call shenpa.

Father Greg Boyle and Pema Chödrön came together in a night of interfaith conversation for a great cause: aiding Homeboy Industries, the world’s largest rehabilitation, re-entry, and job training program for former gang members. Originally founded by Father Greg in 1992, Homeboy Industries has helped thousands of people find renewed hope after leaving gang life.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Words. We use them all the time, every day, mostly without giving them much thought at all. We take for granted that they’re here at our disposal whenever we need them. But if you’ve ever wished you could communicate more effectively, words are the place to start. It’s incumbent upon you to choose the best words to accomplish your goals, because how you choose to communicate influences—well, everything! The power of communication shapes our professional goals, our relationships, and our lives—so the words we choose to use carry a great deal of power.

Story
I have discovered a group of women who refuse to be exploited, are immune to manipulation, and who never settle in the name of love. These ladies know what they want and take what they want by beating men at their own game. Utilizing the secrets exposed in this book, these women gain power, money, and status. Men call them gold diggers, women call them hos, but they call themselves winners. This is the book that society doesn't want you to listen to….

Before You Meditate Listen to This
I've heard Pema Chodron before, but it's been years since I last mediated. This was a great way to start back into it. "It's okay to have wild mind. It's okay to be distracted. Be aware of what you are feeling."
The techniques described within sound like a great way to get settled while meditating. This audio contains some meditation/reflection, so do it at home rather than while driving. I look forward to more from Pema Chodron.

The Mind
I enjoyed this author Pemba Chodron and felt it was the tip of more to come. Her narrating was terrific and I just know she has more to say. Good albeit short book.

Need Experience To fully understand
What was most disappointing about Pema Chodron’s story?
I found it to be a bit over my head, I wasn't really able to just relax and listen, it required a great deal of thought for someone who is inexperienced.
What didn’t you like about the narrator’s performance?
Not a professional recording, there is someone in the background that you can hear clearing their throat throughout the whole thing and it is very off-putting and unprofessional. I really wish I could get my money back.
